Bet on College Football – Oregon to Lay Double Digits on Road

September 11, 2010

Those who bet on college football had to be impressed by the onslaught exhibited by Oregon in its first game, and now the explosive Ducks are being asked to cover a double-digit number on the road against an SEC team.

On Saturday Oregon travels to face the Tennessee Volunteers, who returned to the bowl situation last season, in an inter-conference contest that is set to begin at 7 PM ET at Neyland Stadium (natural turf) in Knoxville, TN.

In the football betting odds, Oregon is an 11.5-point favorite, with the total at 53.5 points, so if you bet on college football you are going to have to lay a bunch with the visitor.

Last week Oregon won a game about as convincingly as any team ever could, embarrassing New Mexico, another Division I team, without even trying. I say that because after getting off to a 59-0 lead at the half, they could have probably reached a hundred if they wanted to, but cooled things down, called the dogs off and "settled" for a 72-0 win.

In the final statistical analysis, the Ducks gained a whopping 720 yards compared to just 107 for the Lobos. Keep in mind that Oregon threw its starting quarterback, Jeremiah Masoli, off the team (he resurfaced for Ole Miss last weekend).

Here are some of the NCAA Trends as they impact our pick as we bet on college football:

  • Oregon has covered two of its last six games
  • Oregon has won eleven of its last 13 games SU
  • Oregon has played seven of its last eight games OVER the total
  • Oregon has won five of its last seven road games SU
  • Tennessee has won five of its last seven games SU
  • Tennessee has won its last five home games SU

What may have been lost in the wake of Lane Kiffin’s departure for USC was the fact that Tennessee got feistier last season in his short stay. But those who bet on college football know that Derek Dooley, the son of Vince, has to rebuild a little.

Gone is QB Jonathan Crompton, who was briefly a part of the San Diego Chargers’ practice squad. Matt Simms, the son of Phil and brother of Chris, takes over the job as his transfer from Louisville is complete. The top running back, Bryce Brown, not only left the program and transferred to Kansas State, but is now suing the program because Dooley did not release him from his obligation at Tennessee.

Darron Thomas is the starting quarterback for the Ducks; they have the luxury of another QB with experience, Nate Costa, who got some more of it in the laugher over New Mexico. The best running back they have, LaMichael James, is returning after a one-game suspension to bring even more explosiveness to this lineup.

James ran for 1546 yards as a freshman, and for customers who bet on college football, it should offer empirical evidence about Oregon’s offensive machine that James was able to make everyone forget LeGarrette Blount, and now he’ll join two other backs who gained over 100 yards in the opener.

We don’t want to get too overzealous about the results of early mismatches, but Oregon did indeed beat a FBS team, while Tennessee scored a 50-0 win over small college competition (UT-Martin) in its own lid-lifter.

If you bet on college football, you know that it’s a very tough hill to climb when you are coming east and laying double digits to a team coming off a bowl from a power conference like the SEC, which has won FOUR straight national titles.

At the same time, it is also tough, when you are still getting a feel for what you have offensively, to trade points with an offense that you just know is going to move the ball. Interestingly enough, Tennessee’s defensive boss, Justin Wilcox, put a stop sign on this Oregon scheme last year when he was defensive coordinator at Boise State (152 total yards) and you can argue that he has similar athletes on this Volunteer squad.

Oregon’s hairiest moments have come on the road the last couple of years. They may survive this one, but it won’t be easy. Take the Vols plus the points as we bet on college football for Saturday.

JAY’S PLAY: TENNESSEE +11.5 **
(Graded on a scale of 1-4 stars)
