Bet on Basketball – Weekend Bubble Teams To Watch

March 12, 2011

Ready to Bet on Basketball for the biggest college hoops weekend so far? Well now is the time to get those wagers in, as several teams still have work to do to improve their NCAA Tournament resumes.

Here are a few teams that you might consider wagering on, with each looking to get that one final win to put them over the top:

Boston College (20-11 SU, 16-11 ATS): While teams all over college basketball have done themselves a great disservice over Championship Week, Boston College did the unthinkable on Thursday afternoon: They actually won their conference tournament opener.

Boston College’s ACC Tournament win over Wake Forest on Thursday was not only dominant (they cruised by 14 points), but also an important one. It was the Eagles fourth straight win overall (the Eagles were 3-1 against the spread in that stretch too), something you must remember when you Bet on Basketball this weekend.

With regular seasons sweeps of Maryland and Virginia Tech, plus quality out of conference wins Texas A&M and Cal, Boston College should be in the NCAA Tournament field. Still, an ACC quarterfinal win over Clemson on Friday sure wouldn’t hurt.

USC Trojans (19-13 SU, 15-12-4 ATS): Speaking of hot teams, few are playing better than USC Trojans, who is slowly, but surely, looking more and more like an NCAA Tournament team.

When you Bet on Basketball this weekend remember, USC has now won six of seven straight up, including their Pac-10 Tournament opener over Cal on Thursday.

And while beating Arizona in Friday’s conference semifinal should help, we must remember that USC has one advantage most teams don’t. Four of the Trojans losses came early in the season without point guard Jio Fontan in the lineup.

Remember, the NCAA Tournament committee factors in injuries when placing teams. And with USC playing better while healthy, some of their early season losses might not factor in as much for them as others.

Alabama Crimson Tide (20-10 SU, 14-12 ATS): You’d think that a team that was 20-10 in a conference like the SEC would garner “automatic entry status,” right? Don’t be so sure when it comes to the Crimson Tide.

The problem for Anthony Grant’s bunch is that the quality of their wins isn’t great. Many of them came against SEC West weaklings like Auburn, LSU and Ole Miss (the Crimson Tide went a combined 5-1 against those three), and Alabama was pretty much average against everyone else. Even their “signature,” wins against Kentucky and Tennessee both came in Tuscaloosa.

Beyond that, the Crimson Tide struggled in the out of conference, with bad losses to Iowa, Seton Hall and Providence College amongst others. Looking up and down their schedule, they just don’t seem to have a quality out of conference win.

It’s looking more and more like Friday’s SEC Tournament semifinal against Georgia will be a must-win. What an exciting game that could be, when you Bet on Basketball this weekend!
