Bet on Basketball in the Big East Wednesday

March 9, 2011

If you’re looking to Bet on Basketball this NCAA season, go ahead and wager on a pair of Big East games Wednesday afternoon. Who’ll have the edge when UConn and Georgetown play and Rutgers and St. John’s tip-off? Let’s take a look.

No. 19 UConn Huskies (22-9 SU, 14-11 ATS) vs. No. 21 Georgetown Hoyas (21-9 SU, 15-14 ATS)

Wednesday, March 9: 12:00 p.m. ESPN, Live from Madison Square Garden, New York, NY

The first game of the Bet on Basketball doubleheader at Madison Square Garden comes when two ranked teams- the UConn Huskies and Georgetown Hoyas- get together.

UConn started off the Big East Tournament on Tuesday, with a win over DePaul to give them their first conference tournament win in six years. The Huskies had one of their best all-around games of the season, as guards Kemba Walker and Jeremy Lamb combined for 45 points, with Alex Oriahki chipping in 13 points and 19 rebounds in a 97-71 win.

Meanwhile, the Hoyas enter this Bet on Basketball matchup having struggled in recent weeks, losing their last three games. The reason for the struggles is simple: Georgetown is playing without point guard Chris Wright, who is out with a broken hand. Wright is a senior, and one of the best pure points in the country, averaging 13 points and 5.4 assists. Georgetown’s offense has especially struggled without him, averaging just 48 points in their last three losses.

And with that said, we can’t see the Hoyas pulling the upset here.

As the numbers indicate, this just isn’t the same team without Wright, and even though UConn is struggling, we expect them to pull out the win here. Besides Wright’s offense, remember too that he was expected to defend the potent Kemba Walker as well. Wright’s loss will be felt on both ends of the court.

The first half of this Bet on Basketball doubleheader is clear. Take UConn.

Bet on Basketball Pick: UConn

Rutgers Scarlet Knights (15-16 SU, 13-12-2 ATS) vs. No. 17 St. John’s Red Storm (20-10 SU, 15-14 ATS)

Wednesday, March 9: 2:30 p.m. ESPN, Live from Madison Square Garden, New York, NY

In the second half of the Bet on Basketball doubleheader, we’ve got a fellow Tuesday winner, Rutgers, taking on the hometown darling St. John’s Red Storm.

For Rutgers, yesterday’s win was one of their most thrilling of the season, as they overcame a six point halftime deficit to defeat New Jersey rival Seton Hall in overtime. Senior Jonathan Mitchell had one of the best games of his season with 25 points, including 11 of 14 shooting from the free throw line.

Still, this is St. John’s home arena, and their time to shine. When you Bet on Basketball, they’re the play to make.

The Red Storm were and are one of the most feared home teams in all of college basketball this year, beating Duke, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame and Georgetown among others at Madison Square Garden. Senior guard Dwight Hardy was as good as anyone in this conference late in the season, scoring in double-figures in each of his last 13 games.

At home and highly ranked, there is no safer bet all day Wednesday. Go ahead and take St. John’s when you bet on Basketball.
