Bet NFL Spreads – Baltimore Faces Carolina’s Stay At Home Dad

November 20, 2010

If you were smart enough to bet this NFL betting spread earlier in the week, then you likely got a much better value than what you’ll get now that we know Carolina is deploying a guy who was at home as a stay at home dad. I don’t have a problem with that kind of occupation. But how do you go from changing a baby’s diapers to trying to clench from crapping your own pants when the Ravens defense comes breathing down your throat?

Both Jimmy Clausen (concussion) and Matt Moore (who cares) are out of action, so it will be up to…drum roll please…Brian St. Pierre to save the day.

Don’t know who that is? Don’t worry. Nobody else does. All joking aside, betting the NFL spread on this game might be more difficult than you’d imagine. Teams have trouble gauging how to handle quarterbacks they have zero tape on.

The rule of betting on quarterbacks when teams don’t have a lot of info on usually goes out the window when it’s a guy like St. Pierre, who has been in the league since the 2003 NFL Draft. During what you can barely refer to as an NFL career, the 30-year old St. Pierre has completed 2 NFL passes for a whopping 12 yards.

That rule, just so you know, usually only applies to first or second year quarterbacks. It rarely applies to backups who haven’t ever been successful in the NFL.

Things continue to get worse for the Carolina Panthers in a season where they’ve only won a single game. Unlike their bottom feeding brethren in the NFL standings, they’re also a horrific team to bet on. Carolina is just 1-4 agasint NFL spreads in the last five games.

Baltimore Ravens (6-3) vs. Carolina Panthers (1-8)

NFL Spreads – Baltimore -10.5 (37.5)

Baltimore is also coming off an extended week of rest having played in last Thursday’s barn burner against the Atlanta Falcons. I’ve been dogging the Ravens because they’re not playing “lights out” football on offense until the fourth quarter. They’re too conservative, and are allowing teams like Atlanta and Buffalo to assert themselves early in games. That’s not a good sign.

Well it wouldn’t be had Baltimore been playing any other team other than Carolina. Things haven’t gone well against the NFL spreads for the Ravens, who are just 3-5-2 ATS in their last 10 games on the road. But I have a hunch that they’re tired of trailing in games they’re supposed to win. They’ll come out firing, using this game as a practice of sorts to get Joe Flacco accustomed to revving his engine early.

The hard part isn’t playing the NFL spread in this game, however. It’s picking the total. Combined, both teams are 7-11 in over/unders and while you may think that Baltimore is the stout defense they have been for the past decade, wake up because they simply aren’t. I’m not saying that Carolina will get on the board and challenge Baltimore but they can sneak on there.

Take the OVER as Baltimore gets its offensive motor running early and keeps a torrid pace that Carolina simply won’t be able to match as they fall victim to the fumblings of Brian St. Pierre against the NFL spread and the powerful Ravens.
