Pittsburgh Panthers @ Louisville Cardinals

TV/Radio Broadcast: CBS, Sirius

This might be the biggest game of the entire season for the Panthers, as this is a great chance for them to prove that they belong on the No. 1 line in the NCAA Tournament. We know that U-Pitt is moving up in the pecking order one way or the other this week with a win, as either the San Diego State Aztecs or BYU Cougars will likely have their name removed for consideration for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament depending on the outcome of their game on Saturday night.

However, in order to bet basketball in this one, we have to ask ourselves how good we really think this team is. The answer: Not really all that much.

Sure, we know that you can’t stink to be 25-3 and sit atop the Big East this late in the season, but we’re not all that sure the Panthers are head and shoulders above the rest their conference mates this year; a la how the Duke Blue Devils are doing it in the ACC.

Normally speaking, when Ashton Gibbs and Brad Wanamaker aren’t at their best, U-Pitt struggles quite a bit. There was a huge exception to the rule earlier this week in a win over the West Virginia Mountaineers, as the two stars of the show only scored a combined 20 points. Normally speaking, that would be a disaster for anyone who bet basketball on this duel on the Panthers. However, they triumphed over WVU 71-58.

Louisville needs to figure out how to stay strong on the glass to win this one. The Panthers rank in the Top 10 in the nation both in total rebounds (40.6 per game) and rebounds against (26.0 per game). The Redbirds don’t have a player on their team averaging more than the 5.3 rebounds per game that Terrence Jennings is coming up with.

However, what the Cards can put their hat on is their ability to play defense. They have held these last three foes to an average of just 52.7 points per game, and that’s even fantastic for a team averaging 64.4 points per game allowed.

If this ‘D’ comes up big for Louisville as we expect it to, the Cardinals are going to be well on their way towards pulling off the impressive upset.

Louisville is the way to bet basketball on Sunday.
