Best Racebook Betting Overlay at Del Mar on Thursday Occurs in Race 6

August 1, 2010

Race 6 at Del Mar on Thursday, July 29th, is a $10,000 – $9,000 claimer going 1 1/16th miles over the Del Mar Polytrack. 9 horses have decided to enter the starting gate for Race 6 at Del Mar on Thursday. Because there appears to be small fields throughout Thursday’s card, the best overlay, racebook betting wise, will most likely be found in Race 6 where the “Turf Meets the Surf”.

The horse that I like in this race figures to keep its morning line horse betting odds or even rise a bit odds wise. At least, I’m hoping those odds will rise!

One interesting note about tomorrow is that Patrick Valenzuela, one of the greatest jockeys in the history of the sport, and a man that’s had more problems with drugs (and lived to tell about it!) than Ozzy Osbourne and Keith Richards, returns to SoCal and Del Mar tomorrow.

Good luck, P.Val!

4-Roar of Applause – - 5/1 morning line odds

Trainer Mike Mitchell hasn’t been tearing Del Mar up the way that most people thought he would. That’s okay. Double-M is going to get his barn going soon and when he does, I want to be there to cash in on it! Roar of Applause should be closer to 3 to 1 on the morning line in my mind. The horse betting odds of 5 to 1 make him the biggest overlay in this field. He has the speed to keep the front-runners, Super Harmony and Journeyman, within reach and was last seen running in a $40,000 optional claimer at Santa Anita. The drop in class doesn’t worry me because Mitchell wants to kick-start his barn and if Double-M really wasn’t looking to make some dough in this race, he wouldn’t have given the call to jockey Martin Garcia.

5-Journeyman – - 6/1 morning line odds

There are only two real speed horses in this race and Journeyman is one of them. The son of Unbridled’s Song should be able to lie right off of Super Harmony and then go for that one at the top of the stretch. Jockey Victor Espinoza knows that his buddy Patrick Valenzuela aboard Super Harmony is going to gun for it. Espinoza also knows that he has to stick with P.Val early or his chances of winning will be compromised.

1-Super Harmony – - 3/1 morning line odds

P.Val could steal this race on the front end if Espinoza and Journeyman don’t go with him. Even then, I love the idea of P.Val taking the lead early and then rushing the horse down the stretch! It’s going to be a nice sight. Of course, the Del Mar of today is different than the Del Mar that P.Val is used to. His race tactics might not work on the Polytrack. In any case, I have to use the horse because I don’t want to be the one guy tomorrow who doesn’t have faith in P.Val on a front-runner in a claiming race.

Horse Wagering Strategy

If Espinoza does his job aboard Journeyman, then Super Harmony should get roughed up enough for Roar of Applause, at what I figure to be no worse than 4 to 1 horse betting odds, to run by both of them in the stretch. I’m going to bet Roar of Applause to win. I will bet an exacta with Roar of Applause over Super Harmony and Journeyman. I will reverse that exacta for less.

Good luck!
