Beating the MLB Betting Lines in the National League

February 22, 2011

We all know that the Philadelphia Phillies are the team to beat in the NL this year, but we want to dig just a tad deeper than that to find the real gems that could be had for baseball futures odds. These longshots have a chance of beating the MLB betting lines in the NL!

San Francisco Giants (+600) – The Giants outdueled the Phillies last year in the postseason, and there’s no reason to believe that they can’t do it again in 2011. The same exact pitching staff is back, led by Tim Lincecum, who proved that he can also beat Cliff Lee in the World Series.

Matt Cain still seemingly has a bionic arm, while Madison Bumgarner and Jonathan Sanchez really came on very strong. Buster Posey should be one of the best catchers in baseball to help the G-Men improve on offense, but it is going to take more than that to beat the MLB betting odds this season.

Still, the NL West is relatively weak, as only really the Colorado Rockies might be able to contend this season. Even then, we’re not much for the Rocks, and we know that finding a Wild Card won’t be all that easy either. Once San Fran gets into the postseason, the real show begins, and these odds are going to look great for it to win a pair of short series with that rotation.

St. Louis Cardinals (+1000) – As long as you’re not a believer that Albert Pujols is going to be distracted all season long with this ongoing issue with this being the last year of his contract, the Redbirds should be fine. They really did charge strongly at the end of last season, and they almost had to with guys like Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright at the top of the rotation.

If St. Louis gets into the show, it will be as dangerous as it comes, as this might be the second best 1-2 punch that the NL has to offer. The Cards are definitely beating the MLB betting lines in the National League more than one out of 10 times with this roster.

Milwaukee Brewers (+1200) – Has the whole world forgotten that the Brew Crew picked up Zack Greinke in the offseason? This legitimately could have been a bigger coup than when the Phils snared Cliff Lee. When push comes to shove, Lee hasn’t won a Cy Young since his days with the Cleveland Indians. Greinke won one two years ago.

Now, he switches over to the NL, where no one has seen him pitch that much before, and he moves Yovani Gallardo back into the No. 2 hole in the rotation where he probably belongs. The lineup still has some pop with Corey Hart, Prince Fielder, and Ryan Braun. The Brew Crew is definitely a team to watch on the MLB betting lines.
