BCS National Championship Preview – Oklahoma vs Florida

January 9, 2009

The BCS Title Game is the pinnacle of the college football betting season, and this year’s edition features two of the most storied programs in college football when the Oklahoma Sooners (12-1 SU, 10-2 ATS) take on the Florida Gators (12-1 SU, 10-2 ATS). Both the Gators and the Sooners have been phenomenal offensive teams this season, destroying opponents against the NCAA betting odds as well as on the field. Both teams are also led by Heisman Trophy winning quarterbacks, Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford won the prestigious award this year while Florida’s Tim Tebow won it last season.

Oklahoma became one of the highest scoring teams in college football history this year, as well as the only team to score 60+ points in five straight games. Sam Bradford has led the way for the team, completing 68.3% of his passes for 4464 yards with 48 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also leads the nation in passer efficiency rating with a 186.3 mark.

If trying to stop Bradford isn’t enough to keep opposing defensive coordinators scrambling for answers, teams must also try to stop the lethal 1-2 running game punch of Chris Brown and DeMarco Murray, who have combined for 2112 yards and 34 touchdowns on the year. However, Florida DC Charlie Strong however won’t have to worry about Murray, who tore his hamstring in the Sooners’ 62-21 sports betting win over Missouri in the Big XII Title Game. That said; he will have to worry about an offense so prolific that 11 of their 12 games against FBS opponents went over the ‘total’ per the closing college football gambling lines this season.

Florida bettors know that their money rests in the hands of one of the greatest players ever to play the college game in Tim Tebow. As good as Tebow was last season, he was almost as good this time around, completing 64.9% of his passes for 2515 yards with 28 touchdown passes and just two interceptions; he also chimed in on the ground rushing for 12 touchdowns. The other major threat on Florida’s lightning-quick offense has been WR Percy Harvin, who racked up 16 touchdowns and 1133 rushing and receiving yards this season. While the Gators may not have put up as many points as the Sooners, they have been equally as dominating for NCAA bettors, covering 10 of their 12 games against FBS opponents and are currently on an eight game cover streak against the closing NCAA wagering lines.

NCAAF betting trends that gamblers should know before wagering on the game include these tidbits: Oklahoma is 7-1 ATS in its last eight non-conference games, the Gators are 15-3 ATS in their last 18 games against a team with a winning record, and the ‘over’ is 19-7 in the Gators last 26 games overall.

NCAA odds currently have the Gators as five point favorites in this game with a ‘total’ of 69.5 points.
