Basketball Betting – Nuggets Try Hold On To Carmelo, Beat Back Mavericks

February 11, 2011

Basketball bettors by now are well aware that among the teams that expressed interest in Carmelo Anthony is the Dallas Mavericks, so the Denver Nuggets will try to hold on to Carmelo and try to beat back his potential suitor on Thursday night, in a game that begins at 10:30 PM ET at the Pepsi Center in Denver.

In the basketball betting odds, the Nuggets are a two-point favorite, with the total on the game posted at 210 points. It’s the second half of the doubleheader on TNT.

NBA Betting Odds: Denver -3, Dallas +3, Total 210

TV: TNT

Here are some of the trends that involve NBA betting on this matchup:

· Dallas has won its last ten games SU
· Dallas has covered five of its last seven games
· Dallas has won its last five road games SU
· Denver has lost five of its last seven games SU
· Denver has won 19 of its last 25 home games SU
· Denver has played four of its last six home games UNDER the total

Basketball bettors in Dallas are excited about the possibilities. Mark Cuban, the forward-thinking owner of the Mavericks, is certainly thinking of a forward right now. It’s Carmelo Anthony, who is on the trading block, and this is not something that has popped up all of a sudden.

Cuban has been saying since December, in so many words, that he is okay with "renting" a guy like Carmelo, because, in his own words, "Because then it’s up to me to try to convince them to stay." In other words, it would be up to him to put together a deal for a contract extension, but he’d have time to do it. Call it "exclusive negotiating rights."

Here are some of the head-to-head trends that concern NBA betting on this game:

· Four of the last five meetings have gone UNDER the total
· Denver has won eleven of the last 15 meetings SU
· Denver has covered 13 of the last 18 meetings
· Denver has won eight of the last ten meetings SU as the home team
· Denver has covered seven of the last ten meetings as the home team
· Denver has made more three-pointers in six of the last eight meetings

Both teams were involved in close games last night. The Mavs defeated the Sacramento Kings by two points, while Denver lost to Golden State by two. The Mavs unfortunately missed the cover in basketball betting, but it was their fifth straight road win.

Dallas has shown a little more ability to perform in the second end of back-to-backs, but the depth situation may be somewhat in question with Caron Butler out for the year (hence the interest in Anthony), while Chauncey Billups is expected to play for Denver.

The important thing is that Dirk Nowitzki plays, and he has averaged 29 points in his games against Denver this season. They’ve split ‘em up, with each team winning on the other team’s home floor, and frankly, it’s a game where we are interested in any points that are available.

Dallas has covered 12 of 15 getting single digits on the road, so we’re going the way of the Mavericks in basketball betting for Thursday.

JAY’S PLAY: DALLAS +3 **
(Graded on a scale of 1-4 stars)
