Basketball Betting – #18 Michigan State Battles #13 Purdue in Huge Big Ten Matchup
January 22, 2011
The #18 Michigan State Spartans battle the #13 Purdue Boilermakers in a huge Big Ten matchup on Saturday, January 22nd. The college basketball betting odds makers will most likely list Purdue as a -6 ½ to -7 ½ point favorites versus Tom Izzo’s Spartans.
MSU vs. Purdue isn’t the only big game going on this Saturday night. The Marquette Golden Eagles face off against rival Notre Dame and #25 Arizona battles the Washington Cougars in a Pac 10 contest.

Jan. 22nd – NCAA BB Games – Late
**Records not counting Thursday and Friday games.
Marquette Golden Eagles (13-6) at #16 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (15-4)
Where: Purcell Pavilion, South Bend, Indiana
When: 7:00 pm EST
Fair Basketball Odds: Notre Dame -5 ½
Analysis: The Golden Eagles thumped the Irish 79 to 57 the last time the two teams faced off versus each other. The reason that Marquette was so effective versus the NCAA betting lines in that was because they shot a tremendous 70.6% from 3-point land. I don’t envision that happening this Saturday on Notre Dame’s home court. The Irish is 4 and 3 against the spread at home and, more importantly, has beaten Georgetown, Connecticut, St. John’s and Cincinnati straight up in their last 4 home games. They will have something designed defensively to take away the Golden Eagles’ 3-point shot on January 22nd and if Marquette doesn’t make the 3-point shot, they’re dead.
#18 Michigan State Spartans (12-6) at #13 Purdue Boilermakers (16-3)
Where: Mackey Arena, West Lafayette, Indiana
When: 9:00 pm EST
Fair Basketball Odds: Michigan State +5 ½
Analysis: Michigan State is a horribly infuriating squad. At times they look like they’ll cover every spread in the online sports book, like when they lost to Duke by only 5 points, 79 to 84, on Dec. 1st. Then, they bomb like when they lost straight up to Illinois 62 to 71 as +4 point dogs in their last. I believe that the decent Spartans show up on Saturday and just being decent might be enough versus reeling Purdue. The Boilermakers have lost 2 out of their last 3, to Minnesota and West Virginia, and barely beat Penn State 63 to 62 as -13 point home favorites in their last. MSU might do enough to win this game straight up. A moneyline bet could be in order.
#25 Arizona Wildcats (15-3) at Washington State Cougars (13-5)
Where: Beasley Coliseum, Pullman, Washington
When: 10:30 pm EST
Basketball Odds: Arizona +2 ½
Analysis: Are the Arizona Wildcats back? Well, not yet, but they are a much better squad this season than they were last season, that’s for sure. Bear Down is finally ranked after 3 straight victories over Cal, Stanford and Arizona State. The ‘Cats should still be dogs in the college basketball sportsbook on Saturday versus Washington State, however, since the Cougars aren’t a bad team themselves. WASU beat Stanford 61 to 58 in their last game. They can definitely beat Arizona on Saturday, but I like that the ‘Cats score 77.7 points per game while shooting 48.7% from the field. I’ll go with AZ in this contest.
