In Monday afternoon’s victory, the highlight was very clearly Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols, who wasted little time showing the baseball world that he is still the game’s top player. He hit a home run in his first at bat, and followed it up with another in the seventh, finishing the game with four hits and three RBI. But don’t be mistaken into thinking that Pujols is the only offensive threat on St. Louis.

On Monday, seven of the Cardinals eight position players finished the game with at least one hit. This lineup has depth throughout, as Matt Holliday is a feared slugger in the four hole, and young centerfielder Colby Rasmus showed why everyone in St. Louis is high on him. He finished the game with two hits, including a two run home run in the fourth. The man who has been tasked with trying to slow down this St. Louis offense, is 24-year-old starter Johnny Cueto. Cueto has been good but hardly great during his Major League career, and is coming off a season that saw him finish 11-11 on the season. Cueto did get off to a hot start however, as he won five of his first seven decisions in 2009.

However, on the mound, he’ll be opposed by a man who may be the most underrated pitchers in all of baseball, Cardinals right hander Adam Wainwright. Wainwright is coming off a breakout 2009 season, where he won 19 games, and struck out 212 batters, finishing third in last year’s NL Cy Young award voting behind only Tim Lincecum and teammate Chris Carpenter.

And it’s because of Wainwright, that the Cardinals should be your play here.

Simply put, the 28-year-old is one of the most dominant young arms in the game, and a guy who is only going to improve in 2010. Expect his offense to stake him a lead in the middle innings, and for Wainwright who threw 33 innings to do the rest. Also keep in mind that Wainwright is one of the truly elite road pitchers in baseball, as the Cardinals are 20-6 in his last 26 starts away from Busch Stadium

Take the Cardinals straight up and the under run total, in Wednesday’s MLB Betting odds.
