Baseball Odds Say that the Dodgers Bounce Back From Tuesday Night Loss

September 22, 2010

The baseball odds in the sportsbook say that the Los Angeles Dodgers bounce back from a somewhat stunning 0 to 6 loss to the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night.

The Dodgers were favorites to beat the Padres on Sept. 21st since they had sent Chad Billingsley to the mound.  Billingsley got worked over by SD and the Dodgers appear absolutely snake bitten again.  Hey, it’s been an odd season for Big Blue.

The Padres hope that the snake biting continues on Wednesday night for the Dodgers because they face L.A. pitcher Ted Lilly as underdogs based on the baseball odds.

Los Angeles Dodgers
Ted Lilly – L                           -1 ½ +160        -135     U 7  -115

The betting trends don’t justify the baseball odds in the sportsbook for this game.

  • The San Diego Padres are 1 and 4 in their last 5 games following a victory.
  • The San Diego Padres are 6 and 1 in Tim Stauffer’s last 7 starts following a team loss in their previous game.
  • The Los Angeles Dodgers are 0 and 4 in Ted Lilly’s last 4 starts.
  • The Los Angeles Dodgers are 1 and 6 in their last 7 games at home.

The lethargic Dodgers are just a bad team right now.  The worse move they ever made, it turns out, was hiring manager Joe Torre. The man has done nothing but run them into the ground.

Okay…Dodger ownership has something to do with it as well.  I’m confused as to why Lilly and Big Blue are favorites in this game.  To me, the trends regarding Stauffer and the Friars are way more positive than those regarding Lilly and the Dodgers.

I suppose there are some positives regarding Ted Lilly.  He did shut down the Padres in a 2 to 1 Dodgers’ victory on Aug. 3rd, his first start as a pitcher for L.A., but Aug. 3rd was a long time ago.  Lately Lilly has been downright scary bad.  He’s given up 9 earned runs off of 14 hits in his last 9.1 innings pitched.  Going back to his last 4 starts, he’s 0 and 3 overall and the Dodgers are 0 and 4 in Lilly’s last 4 starts.

By contrast, the Friars have been decent with Stauffer on the mound.  Although Stauffer was pegged for 4 earned runs off of 5 hits in only 5 innings of work in a 0 to 4 loss to St. Louis in his last start, he had been pitching very, very well before that.

Stauffer still has a fantastic 1.99 ERA.  Considering the fact that the Dodgers have one of the worst offenses in MLB, Big Blue is ranked 22nd in runs, 20th in batting average and 26th in dingers, I have to say that the baseball odds makers created a seriously flawed betting line.

The Padres should be the favorites, not the Dodgers in this one.  Baseball handicappers should take advantage.  They should back the Padres at the baseball odds and hope that Stauffer bounces back from his terrible start against the Cardinals in his last.
