Baseball Matchup Betting – Yankees vs Angels

April 25, 2010

Baseball’s hottest team hits the West Coast in this weekend’s baseball betting odds. That’s when the New York Yankees visit the Los Angeles Angels.

New York Yankees (11-4 SU, 11-4 R/L, 8-7 O/U) at Los Angeles Angels (8-9 SU, 7-10 R/L, 7-9-1 O/U)

Saturday, April 24: 4:10 p.m. FOX

New York:
(Andy Pettitte-L)

Los Angeles:
(Joel Piniero-R)

For the rest of baseball, there’s really no nice way to put this right now, but the Yankees are simply a juggernaut. They can do things offensively, defensively and do it with excellent pitching both from their starting rotation and bullpen.

Maybe the scariest part about the Yankees at this moment, is that despite an offense that ranks sixth in all the majors (averaging 5.40 runs per game), their best hitters really aren’t playing all that well. On the young season, it’s been players like Robinson Cano (4 home runs and 11 RBI) and Jorge Posada (batting .348) that are carrying them. Superstars Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira still have yet to heat up, as they’ve combined for four home runs and 17 RBI. When those two get rolling, this team will truly be at top form.

On the mound in Saturday’s baseball betting odds will venerable lefty Andy Pettitte. Despite being just under the age of 38-years-old, Pettitte hasn’t seemed to miss a beat in 2010, as he is 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA in three starts this season. His last outing was maybe the most impressive, as he pitched eight innings of four hit ball in a 5-2 victory over Texas last Saturday.

As for Los Angeles, they seem to just be heating up, after struggling out of the gate. Much like New York, they have a deep and potent lineup, and much like the Yankees, they’re getting contributions from places they’ve never expected it. So far on the season, it is second baseman Howie Kendrick who is leading this team with a .327 batting average, while both Hideki Matsui and Kendry Morales are providing pop with four home runs apiece. Add in veterans like Torii Hunter and Bobby Abreu, and there isn’t an easy out in this lineup.

And despite maybe not being their most recognizable pitcher, Saturday’s starter Joel Piniero may be their best so far this season. Like Pettitte, Piniero has made three starts, going 2-1 with a 1.77 ERA. The 32-year-old was absolutely lights out in his last appearance, throwing 7.1 innings of shutout ball against the Detroit Tigers.

With both pitchers already in midseason, expect a low scoring game, and a game which the Angels will ultimately be victorious.

The truth is, that it doesn’t seem to matter which players Anaheim gains or loses over the years, they never let up. This year has been no exception as Matsui and Piniero have plugged themselves into this organization seamlessly. Add them in with returning players like Kendrick, Hunter and Erick Aybar, and it’s no surprise that this team is atop the AL West standings.

Expect a pitcher’s duel on Saturday with two potential All-Stars on the mound. But with the home field, and a lineup just starting to peak, make the Angels your pick in Saturday’s baseball betting odds.
