Under 10: -120
Coming into this season, many baseball bettors thought it’d be these two teams at the top of the division, but instead, they find themselves in the NL West basement.
For Arizona, you can’t blame Friday’s starting pitcher Ian Kennedy. The former New York Yankee has been one of the few good surprises for Arizona, as he enters this game with a 3-3 record and 3.38 ERA. Don’t be fooled by his win total though, Kennedy has been a bright spot in this rotation, having given up three runs or fewer in his last six starts. He’ll take the bump on Friday looking to get his first win since May 19.
Kennedy will be countered on the mound Friday night by Colorado righty Aaron Cook. While Kennedy has been a positive surprise, Cook has been a bad one, as he has a 2-3 record and 4.97, just two years after making the National League All-Star team. Cook will look to turn things around, and is coming off a win last week against Los Angeles.
Offensively, Arizona has been slightly better than Colorado, although the numbers may be a bit misleading. The Diamondbacks are currently ranked ninth in all of baseball, averaging 4.76 runs per game, but bat just a disappointing .249 as a team. Outfielder Justin Upton has been one of the most underachieving players in baseball, batting just .249, after hitting .300 in 2009, and signing a massive offseason contract.
As for the Rockies, the story is similar to the Diamondbacks, they’re just not getting it done with the bats. Other than Troy Tulowitzki (.308, seven home runs), Colorado is struggling to find anything consistent offensively. Veteran Todd Helton who hit .325 a year ago, is hitting just .253 in 2010, with little power. Brad Hawpe and Ian Stewart are struggling as well, and Dexter Fowler who was expected to be a major contributor was actually recently sent back down to the minor leagues.
With two struggling offenses, the smart baseball bet would be to go with the hotter pitcher. That’d be Kennedy and the Diamondbacks.
Pitching in a small market and on the same staff as Dan Haren, Kennedy has gotten a bit lost in the shuffle in 2010, but few players have improved more from last year than the 25-year-old.
Expect a solid start from him, and just enough offense for Arizona to secure a Friday night money line victory. Make them your baseball bet!
Aaron’s Pick: Diamondbacks Money Line (-120)
