Baseball bettors everywhere are familiar with Halladay’s handiwork, as, despite mark on the season, he is still one of the most dominating pitchers in baseball.
Coming into this matchup, Halladay’s record stands at just 11-8, but as you can tell by his 2.18 ERA, most of those losses have been through no fault of his own. Of late Halladay has been at his best, as he’s made four starts during the month of July, only once allowing more than one earned run, and pitching two complete games in the process. His previously mentioned no-hitter was actually a perfect game, thrown on May 29 at Florida.
As for his opponent Jackson, he’s been nowhere near as consistent as Halladay, but he too has a no-hitter to his name. That outing came back on June 2, when he blanked the Dodgers 1-0 in Los Angeles. Jackson has been a mixed bag since then, going 3-3, with those three losses in his last three starts. During that stretch, he’s allowed 13 earned runs in just 17.1 innings pitched.
With Jackson struggling, the advantage certainly goes to the Phillies offense. While Philadelphia isn’t quite as prolific as they’ve been the last two years, they’ve still got one of the elite hitters in baseball. That’d be first baseman Ryan Howard, who leads the National League with 81 RBI, to go along with his team high 23 home runs. Second baseman Placido Polanco just recently returned from injury, and is leading this club with a .318 batting average.
As for the Arizona offense, they’re nothing to scoff at either. Currently, they’ve got six players with at least 10 home runs on the season, led by the hard-hitting Mark Reynolds who’s got 24. Justin Upton is quietly putting up a monster second half, and has now hit safely in 13 straight games.
So with that, who has the edge in Wednesday night’s baseball betting odds? It’s got to be Philadelphia.
While the Phillies have been pedestrian offensively, there has been nothing pedestrian about Halladay’s performance on the mound, the guy has been masterful. Expect Wednesday to be no different.
Even against the potent Arizona offense, look for Halladay to pitch deep into this game (He’s already got seven complete games on the season), and lead the Phillies to victory. It doesn’t help that Arizona is sending the inconsistent Jackson to the mound, who only seems to be getting worse every time he gets sent to the bump.
There’s only one play to make in the Wednesday night betting odds.
Aaron’s Pick: Philadelphia Run Line (-1 ½, -135)
