Baseball Betting – Milwaukee Brewers vs Florida Marlins

June 2, 2010

The Milwaukee Brewers clash with the Florida Marlins as the baseball betting favorites on Wednesday night. Even though the Brewers are on a three game skid, they send Yovani Gallardo to the mound on Wednesday. That’s the reason that they are favored in the MLB sportsbook.

Gallardo has been exceptional lately. Overall, his record is 5 and 2 with a 2.78 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP, but in his last 8 starts, he’s gone 5 and 0 with a 1.80 ERA.

The Brewers are going to need every bit of Gallardo’s terrific pitching because Florida has dominated them in 2 games so far during this 4 game series.

The Marlins have outscored the Brewers 19 to 9 in two games. The Brew Crew has given up a total of 29 runs in their last three games. They’ve been outscored 29 to 13 in those three games.

Does Gallardo have enough to put Milwaukee back on the winning track?

Baseball Betting Odds

Milwaukee Brewers
Yovani Gallardo – R -115

Florida Marlins
Chris Volstad – R -105

The trends favor neither team in this matchup.

  • The Milwaukee Brewers are 4 and 0 in Yovani Gallardo’s last 4 starts as a favorite of -110 to -150.
  • The Milwaukee Brewers are 1 and 6 in Yovani Gallardo’s last 7 starts when their opponent scores 5 runs or more in their previous game.
  • The Florida Marlins are 5 and 1 in their last 6 games at home versus a team with a losing record.
  • The Florida Marlins are 0 and 8 in Chris Volstad’s last 8 starts versus a team with a losing record.

The thing about Gallardo and the Brew Crew is that, yes, he’s been exceptional in his last 8 starts, but that’s just it. He’s been exceptional. The Brewers as a team haven’t. Milwaukee is 1 and 3 in the last 4 games that Gallardo has started.

Again, it’s not Yovani’s fault. It’s clearly the fault of the Brewers’ relievers, in particular, Trevor Hoffman. Hoffman was abused on Tuesday night when giving up 3 runs in the 7th inning.

Gallardo is coming off of a victory, where he shut out the New York Mets, but that’s because he pitched the full 9 innings. What happens if Gallardo has to leave the game in the 6th or the 7th inning? The Brewers will need to throw somebody else in there and that’s when all hell will break loose.

Florida’s starter, Chris Volstad, hasn’t been as bad as it looks at first. Yes, he’s lost his last 4 games. Yes, his record is 3 and 6 overall, but he hasn’t given up more than 3 runs in his last two starts and Volstad has never dropped 5 in a row.

Oh, yes, the Marlins are also 1 and 8 against the Marlins in Miami since 2008.

My baseball betting money will be on the Marlins in this game. As good as Gallardo is, the chances of him pitching 9 innings again just aren’t very good in my opinion. Eventually, the Brew Crew will have to put in a reliever and that’s when the Marlins will go to work.

Florida is the baseball bet to make in this game.

MLB Sportsbook Pick: Florida Marlins -105
