ATS Stud VA Tech is a Big Favorite in the Sportsbook to Cover vs. Georgia Tech

November 3, 2010

The Virginia Tech Hokies are favored by 12 ½ points in the sportsbook to cover the spread versus the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Thursday, Nov. 4th.

Since losing their first 2 games to Boise State and James Madison, the Hokies have been nothing but against the spread studs when winning straight up and covering in 6 straight games.

VA Tech has turned into the top team in the ACC and appears determined to get back to the ACC Championship game. Can the Hokies make it 7 in a row ATS when they take on rival Georgia Tech on Thursday night?

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets +12 ½ -110 O 56 -110

Virginia Tech Hokies -12 ½ -110 U 56 -110

The sportsbook wagering trends favor both teams in this game.

  • The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are 5-1-1 ATS in their last 7 games following a straight up loss.
  • The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are 5 and 1 ATS in their last 6 games as a road underdog of 10 ½ points or greater.
  • The Virginia Tech Hokies are 6 and 0 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
  • The Virginia Tech Hokies are 9 and 0 ATS in their last 9 games following a win.

This is a huge game as Virginia Tech is in first place and Georgia Tech is in second place in the Coastal Division of the ACC. VA Tech has been exceptional both straight up and against the spread since the James Madison defeat, but save for the 41 to 30 victory over North Carolina State, they haven’t really beaten any team of note either straight up or against the spread.

Before failing to Clemson 13 to 27, the Yellow Jackets had been on a 3 game winning streak and a 2 game cover streak in the sportsbook when beating Virginia 33 to 21 in a 10-point cover and Middle Tennessee 42 to 14 in an 18 ½ point cover.

So, as badly as VA Tech’s competition has been, Georgia Tech’s competition has been even worse but that’s not the only reason to like the Hokies. Georgia Tech just doesn’t seem capable of stopping anybody on defense, they gave up 21 points to Virginia, and their offense relies too heavily on the run. 317 out of the 402 yards that Georgia Tech gains each game comes from their rushing attack. The Hokies have much better balance on offense when racking up 200 yards both rushing and passing per game.

The most important reason to like Virginia Tech to cover the spread in the sportsbook vs. Georgia Tech, though, is the fact that the Hokies’ D has improved. VA Tech held the Duke Blue Devils to only 7 points in their last game, a 44 to 7 victory. In contrast, Clemson shut down Georgia Tech’s offense in a 13 to 27 Yellow Jacket loss.

The Hokies may give up points to the Yellow Jackets in this game, but I do believe that VA Tech will score many more points than the Yellow Jackets do on Thursday night. To me, there is one great wager to make on this game in the sportsbook and that’s on the Virginia Tech Hokies to beat Georgia Tech and to cover the 12 ½ point wagering spread.
