Afternoon MLB Bets – Odds Against Padres Sweeping Giants

May 13, 2010

The main threat to the San Diego Padres in the regular season of MLB betting has always been the San Francisco Giants, and with two wins in this series already, their reign in the National League West looks safe for now. The Giants have now fallen 2.5 games behind the pace that the Padres are setting, but they’re the odds on favorite to shorten the gap in the standings.

You wouldn’t know that visiting the pitcher history in this one.

The Padres are 1-3 with an ND in his Jonathan Sanchez’s most recent 5 starts against the Giants. On the season, Sanchez is 2-2 SU in six starts and has given up just 24 hits and 12 runs in 36 innings, lasting an average of 6.0 innings per game.

Of course, the pitchers have been carrying the Padres during their recent winning ways. The Padres are 9-3 SU in their past 12 meetings with their NL West rivals despite the offense cranking in 4.4 runs per game, which ranks them 12th in the NL. This season alone, the Padres’ pitching staff has a 1.57 ERA when battling with the Giants.

San Diego Padres (21-12) vs. San Francisco Giants (18-14)

Thursday, May 13th — AT&T Park — 3:45pm EST

MLB Betting Lines:

Matt Latos – R +1.5 -145 +155 O 7.5 +105
Jonathan Sanchez – L -1.5 +125 -175 U 7.5 -125

Countering for the Giants will be right handed ace Matt Latos, who is becoming known as a bit of an iron man even though his career is young. He’s gone 2-3 SU in six starts and has pitched 34.1 innings in those starts. Unfortunately, while he’s able to compete for long stretches, he’s also allowed 32 hits and 16 runs against this season. Obviously, his pitch count need a lot of work.

If Latos can’t keep the suddenly sparked Padres off the scoreboard, the Giants will be in big trouble. Despite having some decent bats at the plate, they’re the 13th worst road offense with just 4.2 runs per game.

Where To Watch: CSBA

With the Padres and Giants ranked first and second in the defensive rankings respectively, this series has two of the best defensive teams in the National League. That makes the runline a very iffy MLB bet. That doesn’t mean I’m shying away from the Padres. The oddsmakers are counting on the bow to break with the momentum chugging Padres, but it won’t happen against the Giants.

Furious MLB Bet – Padres ML Only (UNDER)
