AFC West Conference Preview 2010 – NFL Predictions to win Division and Betting Advice

August 2, 2010

The AFC West will probably not be hard to figure out who my NFL Predictions will be based on the lopsided NFL spread for these 4 teams. Let’s lay it out, check it out and win out.

San Diego Chargers (-325 to win AFC West 2010) 13-3 in 2009 and won AFC West
They closed the regular season in 2009 with 11 wins in a row. They have a record of 20-4 against their division rivals the past 4 years. The AFC West is the Chargers house.

Philip Rivers is a flat-out tough talented terrific passer. He is the most underrated quarterback in the last three years, but this year will change all of that. Rivers had 4,254 yards, 28 touchdowns and 9 interceptions while compiling an impressive 65.2 completion percentage in 2009.

He will be without his stud receiver Vincent Jackson for at least the first three games this season due to a suspension. Jackson has also refused to sign his tender while being a restricted free agent. It’s possible he could sit out 10 games to start the season.

Antonio Gates is the tight end that keeps giving every year. This will keep the defensive secondary honest and open it up for people like Malcom Floyd at 6-5. Add Sproles coming out of the backfield for screens and you’ve still got some serious threats for Philip Rivers.

Darren Sproles (shortest player in NFL last season at 5’6”), along with rookie Ryan Mathews drafted 12 th overall in this year’s NFL draft should provide nice run support for Philip to let loose on the secondary also.

Their expectations have been high for years and they really need to make that happen for what may be the NFL’s most talented team. The only team they play with over a .500 percentage in the first 6 games is the Arizona Cardinals who lost Hall-of-Famer Kurt Warner to retirement and Anquan Boldin to the Ravens.

Kansas City Chiefs (+700 to win AFC West 2010) 4-12 in 2009 and finished last in AFC West

Matt Cassel will have time to learn this system much better now. With the addition of Charlie Weis as offensive coordinator, it may actually help him. Cassel came from the Patriots where Weis used to actually work and get results.

The big question is if Weis lays down like he did at Notre Dame or actually regains the fire that gave him 3 Super Bowl rings as the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots from 2000 to 2004.

The Chiefs signing of veteran Thomas Jones from the Jets after his exceptional 1,400 yard year was the perfect fit. He’s a veteran about to bring some experience and confidence to a team lacking both.

I have a couple NFL Predictions for you. Expect RB Jamaal Charles to keep up his roll from last year when he averaged an incredible 5.9 yards a carry. He won’t do that again, but he better keep his game tight or Mr. Jones will step in and stomp. This 1-2 punch should end up top 5 in the NFL, and that is exactly what Cassel needs.

Defense is what will surely kill any chances they had at making a run at the playoffs. The linebackers are weak, and the defensive line is average at best. They did pick Eric Berry out of Tennessee at strong safety 5 th overall to help Romeo Crennel develop that secondary. They will improve, but they’re a year or two away from a possible playoff run.

Denver Broncos (+600 to win AFC West 2010) 8-8 in 2009 and finished 2nd in AFC West
Can you say downgrade? That is what Josh McDaniels just did by trading the two top players on the team, Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall. After trading away their next Golden Boy Jay Cutler to the Chicago Bears, Josh is going make or break on his revamp.

Knowshown Moreno needs to quit running like a little school girl and use the speed and quickness he has to fire past linemen. If he pansies around again this year, Denver could end up at the bottom of this conference.

On defense, the Broncos have 2 top notch secondary players in Champ Bailey and Brian Dawkins, but they are starting to age a little bit. The bigger problem is no pressure up front for opposing quarterbacks to have time to decimate the secondary.

Elvis Dumervil will not be getting the freedom after his league leading 17 sacks last year. The secret is out, and that means double teams. The defensive line is a crap shoot, so if someone doesn’t break out to occupy the double teamers, Elvis may have to leave the building.

Oakland Raiders (+750 to win AFC West 2010) 5-11 in 2009 and finished third in AFC West
This team has been on It’s a shame a college football stud like Jamarcus Russell gets arrested for something involving drugs. Between that and the rumors that he’s going to the Monstropolis Omaha, Nebraska for semi-semi-semi-semi ball and his lack of motivation to even walk up stairs, the Raiders finally made a solid move by cutting that meaningless waste of space.

I wouldn’t put new quarterback Jason Campbell in the elite status, but he’s a solid thrower that limits his interceptions and other mistakes. If he had any receivers, it might be a .500 year.

The Raiders Nnamdi Asomugha is the light at the end of the tunnel. That light is too small, and that tunnel is too long for that to make something extreme happen.

The last time they were in the playoffs was also the last time they had over 5 wins in the regular season 2002. That was the year they lost in Super Bowl 37 when they lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and their coach from 2 years earlier Jon Gruden.

The NFL has 8 divisions and 8 different sets with a different NFL spread for each division. The San Diego Chargers are the heaviest favorite of all 8 NFL divisions. There’s a reason for that. They’re going to win this division in a runaway even if Tim Tebow gets to take the helm in Denver. The Chiefs will be the most improved, and they have a chance at second place if Denver’s new Josh team implodes. The Raiders did finally make some good moves this year, but they will be used to where they will end up – in the cellar. Those are NFL Predictions you can bank on.
