AFC Update – Jets, Miami, Oakland, Pats and Colts are at the Top of NFL Betting

November 15, 2010

The New York Jets regained the top spot in my AFC Top 5 NFL betting list after covering the spread in their game versus the Cleveland Browns this past Sunday.

The Patriots jump into the Top 5 after dominating the Pittsburgh Steelers on the road and the Dolphins enter my Top 5 after beating Tennessee at home. Who is in the Bottom 5? The usual suspects: the Bengals, the Broncos, the suddenly ridiculous Houston Texans, the tough luck Cleveland Browns, and bye team San Diego.

Let’s get to the AFC Top 5 and the AFC Bottom 5!

AFC Top 5 NFL

  1. New York Jets 7-2 (6-3 ATS) – - Sure, NFL betting handicappers that backed the Jets got lucky when the Jets scored a TD in OT of their 26 to 20 victory over the Cleveland Browns as -3 ½ point favorites. Hey, a cover is a cover. The Jets take on the reeling Houston Texans in their next game.
  1. Oakland Raiders 5-4 (6-3 ATS) – - The Raiders take on the Pittsburgh Steelers this week as -9 point dogs. The Steelers are coming off of a tough loss versus the New England Patriots this past Sunday night. Before football handicappers blindly back the Steel Men in this game, though, they should remember that Oakland has covered in 6 out of their last 7 games and are coming off of a bye week meaning that they should definitely be ready for Pitt on Sunday.
  1. Miami Dolphins 5-4 (6-3 ATS) – - Miami finally won a game at home and they did it in the strangest of ways by benching QB Chad Henne, then reinstituting Henne after Chad Pennington got hurt in the first quarter. The Fins beat Tennessee 29 to 17 as -1 point favorites in the NFL betting sportsbook.
  1. New England Patriots 7-2 (5-3-1 ATS) – - Now, that was a victory! I’ve had my issues with New England this season because their D often times gives up way more point than I think they should but beating the Pittsburgh Steelers 39 to 26 as 4 ½ point dogs on the road is incredibly impressive. The Pats lose to Cleveland straight up one week and then a week later beat the Pittsburgh Steelers. Go figure.
  1. Indianapolis Colts 6-3 (5-3-1 ATS) – - The Colts were 6 ½ point favorites versus the Cincinnati Bengals this past Sunday. So, they didn’t cover the NFL spread in the 23 to 17 victory. That’s okay. The truth is that Indy has suffered through some major injuries. The fact that they get WR Austin Collie back this week for their game versus New England on Sunday should give Pats’coach Bill Belichick nightmares this week.

AFC Bottom 5 NFL sports book

  1. Cincinnati Bengals 2-7 (3-6 ATS) – - Cincinnati probably shouldn’t have covered this past Sunday but the ½ a point on the NFL betting ling made all of the difference. Cincy lost to the Indianapolis Colts by 6 points, 23 to 16, and are easily one of the worst teams in the NFL.
  1. Denver Broncos 3-6 (3-6 ATS) – - I’m not sure if Cincy is the worst, though, because although Denver upset the Kansas City Chiefs, 49 to 29 as 1-point dogs, I’m not a believer that they’ve turned the corner. They play the tough San Diego Chargers on the road this Sunday. They’re not going to score 49 points in that game.
  1. Houston Texans 4-5 (3-6 ATS) – - Houston has now become an also-ran in the AFC. I mean, what were they thinking? If you don’t attempt to at least play defense, then you’re going to end up losing games. The Texans’ D is so bad that teams don’t care about stopping both RB Arian Foster and WR Andre Johnson. Teams can just stop one of those guys and win. AJ had 9 catches for 149 yards and a TD, Foster only had 56 yards and 1 TD, and the Jags still beat the Texans 31 to 24.
  1. Cleveland Browns 4-5 (3-6 ATS) – - I feel bad about putting them on this list after they almost scored the upset over the New York Jets this past Sunday as dogs in the NFC betting sportsbook, but technically, the tough Browns did lose both straight up and ATS. RB Peyton Hillis is an absolute beast. I can’t imagine any defensive player in the NFL wanting to take that guy one-on-one. Cleveland could, potentially, win their next 5 games versus Jacksonville, Carolina, Miami, Buffalo and Cincinnati.
  1. San Diego Chargers 4-5 (4-5 ATS) – - San Diego got a bye. So, it remains to be seen whether or not they improve as a team. They beat Tennessee and Houston before the bye but both of those teams lost this past Sunday to Miami and Jacksonville respectively meaning that the victories, which at first seemed impressive, maybe weren’t all that impressive.
