AFC South Division Preview 2010 – NFL Odds for the Division Winner and Betting Advice

August 1, 2010

The only way you are going to defeat the Indianapolis Colts in this division is to take away Peyton Manning.

The NFL Online Betting Odds say it, the experts say it and I’m saying it. This division isn’t too hard to pin down as Indy has won 10 games and reached the postseason in 10 out of the last 11 seasons.

Indianapolis Colts (-150 to win AFC South 2010) 14-2 in 2009 and won the AFC South

Peyton Manning is distinctly the explanation why the Colts are there every year, and he is showing no signs of problems in camp after having neck surgery in the offseason.

You probably haven’t heard of any of his backups (Painter, Brandstater, Hiller), but you don’t need to. Peyton hasn’t missed a game in his entire pro career.

Brett Favre better watch out-there’s a new Iron Man in town.

They have respectable running backs in Joseph Addai and second year player Donald Brown, but we may never see how good these guys really can be.

With the receiving weapons Manning has, it’s hard to hand it off much.

Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark each snagged 100 balls from Manning last year, and those numbers are probably going up this year.

Add Collie who had a breakout rookie season and Pierre Garcon, and you have the BEST receiving crew in the NFL.

Anthony Gonzalez who had knee surgery early in the 2009 season is back healthy to make his mark in full season action. He will also be pressing these guys for playing time.

Bob Sanders would be the greatest if he could only be healthy. He has missed more games (49) than he has played (47) in his 6 year career.

They intelligently re-signed middle linebacker Gary Bracket, and Freeney and Mathis combined for 23 sacks last year. Barring injuries, they are headed to the Super Bowl for a probable WIN.

The NFL Odds agree with me. They’re that good YES.

Houston Texans (-+350 to win AFC South 2010) 9-7 in 2009 and finished second in AFC South

Houston would have a chance to win if the Colts weren’t in their division.

With Peyton Manning healthy and a balanced Indianapolis team, it’s tough to say when and if Houston will get a chance to win this division.

Matt Schaub still has the best hands in the league to throw to in Andre Johnson.

Everybody knows it is going to Mr. Johnson, but you can’t stop that guy. Kevin Walter needs to be a little more consistent to take the heat off Andre this year.

Tight End Owen Daniels will be back from a torn ACL midway through last season which will definitely help.

The Texans will have to enhance their running game if they’re going to advance in the NFL more than they are.

They led the league in passing yards but were 30th in rushing yards.

I just don’t see them improving much this year the way they bounce around their fair runners Steve Slaton and Ryan Moats.

Maybe rookie Ben Tate from Auburn will light a fire to find a standout. Expect them to be 2nd in the division unless Vince Young has a great year guiding Tennessee.

Tennessee Titans (+350 to win AFC South 2010) 8-8 in 2009 and finished third in AFC South

Vince Young will get a chance to show his worth this year after a full year of preparation to be the starting quarterback.

He went 8-2 in the games he started last year after taking Kerry Collins job. I would say you may have to worry about the cuckoo quotient on Young, but the only quarterback crazier than him in the NFL is the guy he took over from Kerry “cuckoo” Collins.

The running game is so good; I hardly have to mention it. Chris Johnson says he is trying to be the first back in NFL history to have back-to back 2,000 yard rushing seasons.

The Titans effectively took care of his $550,000 salary issues by adding around $2 Million more into this year’s contract.

A fat wallet may not make him faster, but you want your superstar to be happy and content, so he can concentrate on juking linebackers.

The defense is what will bring down the Titans this year. Don’t expect them to do anything special on the defensive side of the ball.

They should at least beat Jacksonville in this division and by the NFL Point Spread this year.

They do have a chance at second, but Vince Young needs to have a monster year for your division winning NFL Odds to pay off here.

Jacksonville Jaguars (+1000 to win AFC South 2010) 7-9 in 2009 and finished last in AFC South

I think this is the last chance for both Coach Jack Del Rio and quarterback David Garrard.

The receiving core is suspect, so they will need MJD to keep the defense honest to give Garrard time to find one of these less than stellar wide receivers he has.

Every team has a big bright light shining down on them. This team has Maurice Jones-Drew. Expect him to have another monster year for the Jags.

The problem is that he needs help, and I don’t see it happening this year.

The only defensive category they rank ok in is punt coverage, but it’s hard to find NFL Odds on that category.

With the moves or lack of good moves they made this year, I don’t expect the defense to do any better than last year.

They only had 14 sacks all of last year which was 8 fewer than the 31st ranked team in this category.

If they don’t improve huge in this area, opposing teams will keep picking their secondary apart.

Even with the NFL Point Spread, expect the Jags to lose straight and by the points most weeks.

Also, expect them to occupy the cellar in the AFC South for a third straight year.

The winner in this division will be no secret when the regular season ends, even though they will have clinched way before that. Indy at -150 is still good NFL Odds when you have a sure winner.
