AFC Eastern Division Preview 2010 – NFL Money Line to win Division and Betting Advice
August 1, 2010
The New England Patriots have had a run on being at the top of this division for a while, but I’m saying the streak is over. The Brady Bunch goes down to Private Ryan this year. The NFL Money Line makes New England a slight favorite over the Jets, but I say to take the Jets.
New York Jets (+140 to win AFC East 2010) 9-7 in 2009 and finished second in AFC East
The Jets are going to show last year was no fluke, as their modest (yeah right) coach Rex Ryan, will let you know. This offensive line may be the best in the entire NFL which bodes well for 2nd year QB Mark Sanchez. He will have to improve on the Jets’ 148.8 yards passing last year which was second worst in the NFL.

The addition of threat Santonio Holmes’ explosiveness and Ladanian Thomlinson’s ability to turn a screen pass into big gains should help the green (not just his uniform) Sanchez with his confidence level.
The defense is the staple and strong point of this team as was the case with Rex’s father Buddy Ryan back in the day. Darrelle Revis, arguably the best cornerback in the business, now has Antonio Cromartie at the other corner from a trade and first round pick Kyle Wilson from Boise State. They have so many good corners; they will have to call it a square back there.
Funky Fact: Speaking of staples, Ryan had surgery to help take 100 pounds off of that tire around his waist. Will this make him quicker, madder, funnier or hungrier?
New England Patriots (+130 to win AFC East 2010) 10-6 in 2009 and won the AFC East
You can say all you want about Tom Brady still being an elite quarterback, but the fact is he’s slipping. The defenses have figured out how to get to him and get under his skin just as the Chargers and the Giants did in their undefeated regular season in 2007. The NFL spreads were way off on the Giants miracle win.
I still remember Brady whining to the officials because he ACTUALLY got hit in the Chargers game. They disrupted his rhythm, and the Giants kept on that Supermodel killer until he succumbed just short of NFL history.
The Pats are a pass first offense, but with 3 aged running backs defenses will be able to key on Brady more. Expect this to be the problem that keeps them down this year. If Wes Welker can bounce back after his knee injuries by October, it can help minimize the damage.
They don’t have that superstar in the defensive secondary which is going to give opposing teams deep passing threat availability. The NFL Money Line may have the Pats ahead of the Jets, but they seem to be wrong this time.
Miami Dolphins (+325 to win AFC East 2010) 7-9 in 2009 and finished third in AFC East
Miami plans on working the 2-headed Monster; Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown returning from foot surgery last year. They ranked fourth in rushing yards last season, but will need to revamp their passing offense and pass defense which was ranked twenty nine last year.
Chad Henne needs to step up and prove he’s a worthy starter for a team that gave up 2 second round draft picks for that playmaker Brandon Marshall. If Henne steps up, maybe we won’t get to see Brandon’s abandon with his attitude problems.
Losing Joey Porter and Jason Taylor on defense will not bode well for the pass rush. Those 2 had 16 sacks last year, so expect the Miami secondary to give it up for long gains this year.
Buffalo Bills (+2500 to win AFC East 2010) 6-10 in 2009 and finished last in the AFC East
Chan Gailey was finally settled on as the new coach to bring his offensive-minded philosophy to. I don’t understand why they didn’t also get a quarterback by trading or drafting this past year. I guess they figured with only one real receiver (Lee Evans) left after dumping T.O. they don’t need a general. They elected to take C.J. Spiller from Clemson which may actually pay off. Now they need to trade Marshawn Lynch. They don’t need 3 quality backs, but they need HELP everywhere else.
The Bills are switching to a 3-4 defensive scheme which should help their personnel especially last year’s first round draft pick and holdout Aaron Maybin. Buffalo’s secondary is the only strength I can see on this team. They had the second most interceptions in the league last year led by Pro Bowl rookie Jairus Byrd’s 9 pickoffs tying the league lead in the NFL.
Although I see an improved Buffalo Bills team, they’re quite a longshot for any league or playoff honors until they secure a reliable QB and somebody besides Evans to throw to. Stay away from wagering on the Bills NFL Money Line to win this division unless you can get +10000.
I’m not sure how I feel about this changing of the guard, but I think it will happen this year. The Jets win this division over the Patriots, and I say GET ALL YOU CAN on the NFL Money Line at +140 for the Jets to win the AFC South.
