72 Hole Group Golf Betting For the Byron Nelson Championship

May 19, 2010

The Byron Nelson Championship is this week’s PGA Tour Event. There’s another terrific PGA Event going on this week on the European Tour, the BMW Championship. Sports gamblers shouldn’t forget to place their golf wagers on that event as well, but because the Byron Nelson Championship is so competitive, some terrific overlay golf bets can be found in the 72 Hole Group Betting category.

Below is an analysis of each group as well as my golf bet pick to win each group.

PGA Tour: Byron Nelson Championship

Where: TPC Four Seasons Resort, Irving, Texas

When: May 20th thru May 23rd

TV: Golf Channel – May 20th 3:00 pm EST 1st Round
Golf Channel – May 21st 8:30 pm EST 2nd Round
CBS – May 22nd 3:00 pm EST 3rd Round
CBS – May 23rd 3:00 pm EST 4th Round

Group A: Hunter Mahan +220, Ben Crane +220, Heath Slocum +300, Y.E. Yang +300

Analysis: Yes, Mahan and Crane have been doing better than Slocum and Yang recently, but Slocum missed the cut in the 2009 Byron Nelson Championship…oh, wait, that’s a bad thing. That leaves Yang as the possible golf wager to outshine Mahan and Crane in this group. I’m going with him because this is the type of tournament that he excels in and his 8th place finish at the Masters was ultra-impressive.

Pick: Y.E. Yang +300

Group B: Dustin Johnson +300, Sean O’Hair +300, Charley Hoffman +300, J.B. Holmes +350, Chad Campbell +400

Analysis: Who can’t win this group? That’s right! Every golfer in this group is a good golf bet to win it. Who gets the nod? Dustin Johnson whom I picked to actually win the Byron Nelson Championship. Johnson finished 4th with a -15 at last year’s Byron Nelson.

Pick: Dustin Johnson +300

Group C: Justin Leonard +300, Kenny Perry +300, Scott Verplank +300, Rory Sabbatini +300, Rickie Fowler +300

Analysis: Leonard and Perry are underlays at the golf odds in this group because neither one has been very impressive in 2010. Verplank shouldn’t even be in this group. Sabbatini did win the 2009 Byron Nelson Championship, but the nod goes to Fowler who has finished in the Top 10 in 2 out of his last 3 tournaments played and really believes he’s got a shot to win rookie of the year over Rory McIlroy.

Pick: Rickie Fowler +300

Group D: Charlie Wi +300, Brain Gay +300, Stewart Cink +300, Carl Pettersson +300, John Senden +350

Analysis: I’m not even worrying about the rest of this group and just putting my golf wagering dollars behind Charlie Wi. Wi’s finished in the Top 25 in his last 3 starts this season and finished tied for 7th at TPC Four Seasons in 2008. He’s going to be very tough to beat in this group. Pettersson deserves come mentioning since he ranks 5th in birdies or better on par 4’s in 2010. So, I guess there is someone else to think about in this group, but I’m sticking with Wi.

Pick: Charlie Wi +300
