2011 NFL Draft Update – Will Tennessee Trade Picks With Carolina Now?

January 6, 2011

The Tennessee Titans have done what was previously unthinkable, and their recent decision to move beyond Vince Young drastically rattles the 2011 NFL sports betting Draft board.

After a mid-season blow up between the franchise player and the franchise’s only coach in history, there was a lot of conjecture about which side Bud Adams would stand by. If history proves anything, it’s that the axe falls on the side of the coach because talent is hard to come by.

Vince Young has been terrific in a strange NFL career, but the writing on the wall with him is too large and emphatic to ignore. I don’t really care about his winning record as a starter, nor his dual threat qualities as a rusher and passer. The fact is that Young never stayed healthy enough to be a viable threat in the AFC Championship scene.

And I mean that mentally as much physically.

When Young was benched following an injury during a matchup against the Washington Redskins in Week 11. Instead of taking it lightly, Young does what he always does and that’s throw a temper tantrum. He called out Jeff Fisher, threw his equipment in to the stands and walked out on the team.

In turn, Fisher banished him from the team facility for the remainder of the year. Even Randy Moss had to have been puzzled by the feud.

The problem with Vince is that this wasn’t his first outbreak. Remember when he was put second on the depth chart behind Kerry Collins in 2008 and nearly committed suicide, despite what his mother tried to claim? This guy is anything but stable mentally or emotionally, and that volatility didn’t translate in to anything positive on the field.

People are allowed to have time to grow up, but Vince is 27-years old and has been in the spotlight for years. You’d think he’d get “it” by now. Now all he’s getting are his walking papers.

The Titans have unfortunately tipped their hat, but this could have huge consequences for the 2011 football betting Draft. Quarterback Kerry Collins is not the long term answer in Tennessee, though he’s been admirable in recent years. The guy has had numerous shots, has made his money and been able to play for some of the league’s marquee franchises. It’s time to move on from him too.

So what do the Titans do? Before the news about Young broke, the team was heavily leaning towards drafting a defensive-tackle because they haven’t had a stable defensive line since allowing Albert Haynesworth and Kyle Vanden Bosch to walk away. This team has to rebuild, but that always starts with a good quarterback.

Fortunately for them, the 2011 NFL Draft is littered with substantial talent in that department. Andrew Luck from Stanford is the unanimous number one pick, but an interesting scenario rises in that regard because there is no way in hell any player as talented as Luck would want to be banished to hell in Carolina.

To that end, it makes sense for Tennessee to trade up to the number-one spot to grab Andrew Luck and send Vince Young to Carolina, along with the eighth pick in the 2011 NFL Draft (and a bunch of other filler) to reinvigorate their own fans. Carolina gets a new franchise quarterback, and can then bolster whatever areas of the team they want with a top-10 pick and everybody wins.

Well, except for Vince Young. He made his bed, and left $12.5 million in roster bonuses and salary at risk by being such a ridiculous malcontent.

Tennessee doesn’t necessarily have to trade up to get a good quarterback. The Panthers, Bills, Bengals, Cardinals and 49ers all pick ahead of the Titans in the 2011 NFL Draft and every one of those teams needs a quarterback.

Only four other players are being regarded as first round talents, with Blain Gabbert, Jake Locker, Cam Newton and Ryan Mallet rounding out the worthy quarterback in that regard. None of those guys, however, are being ranked as top-10 picks.

For those keeping track at home, that means there are six teams in the top-10 that desperately need quarterbacks, and only five guys worthy of taking in the first round.

Here’s the issue for Tennessee: they have Chris Johnson, Kenny Britt and a boat load of other young studs that can make an impact now. They’ve already lost Vince Young to insanity, and can’t risk putting Chris Johnson in that same frustrating territory. The bigger part is that this team is just as deadly with a dual threat like Young at the helm, as they are with a pocket passer like Kerry Collins.

So what could they do with a much better Kerry Collins? A whole heck of a lot. After the top-5 quarterbacks in the draft, there’s a significant drop off to Christian Ponder of FSU who is ranked as the 94th overall pick according to most draft boards. Tennessee knows that it has to rebuild around a franchise quarterback. The problem is that a player of that caliber might not be available with the eighth overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft (which is dumbfounding to say).

Don’t be surprised if Bud Adams does the double screw job by sending Vince Young to Carolina so he can secure his immediate future with a guy like Luck or Gabbert. I could care less that a petulant infant like Young screwed his chances in Tennessee away. I’m much more interested to see how this impacts the 2011 NFL Draft, because you know Tennessee it going to go after one of those marquee passers.
