2010 NFL Draft Betting – Ndamukong Suh vs. Gerald McCoy

April 21, 2010

Are you going to start this NFL betting season early like I am by deciding to bet on the NFL draft? If you do, good luck, and here are my two cents: Two of the top-three projected players in the upcoming 2010 NFL Draft happen to be defensive tackles, and an ongoing debate has ensued to see which one is better.

Let’s just get this point straight once and for all. There is no debate. At least there shouldn’t be. If the Lions don’t take Ndamukong Suh with the second overall pick, they will be making a huge mistake.

Both Suh and McCoy emanate from the Big 12 and this rant certainly isn’t supposed to suggest that McCoy is leftover trash compared to the prime rib on Suh’s bones.

The point is that Suh is a once-in-a-lifetime draft opportunity for a fledgling team like the Detroit Lions or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

By The Numbers
In his three years at Oklahoma University, Gerald McCoy boasted 77 tackles, 47 solo tackles and14 sacks. What made him stand out to most is his unbelievable quickness. At 6-foot-4 and 295 pounds, it’s not easy to move, but McCoy supposedly has the best pass-rushing speed of any tackle in the game.

That being said, I am not convinced that he has the game-changing ability of Suh.

When it comes straight down to it, Suh was able to prove how dominant he can be off the line in comparison to McCoy. This would probably be a good time to mention that Suh managed 82 tackles, 47 solo shots and 12 sacks in 2009 alone. That virtually blows McCoy’s career numbers out of the water.

Raw Details
Ndamukong Suh’s raw power is what defines him as a special prospect. There’s no doubt in my mind that Suh’s ability to generate force from that 6-foot-4, 300 pound body is what makes him undeniably the best prospect in the draft. If the St. Louis Rams weren’t so crippled at the quarterback position, Suh would be a natural choice.

The problem with drafting McCoy second overall is that he’s become somewhat of a by-product of the NFL Draft’s over-analyzed data producing process.

He’s a superb athlete that tests incredibly well. Blinding speed, solid footwork and great technique off the line has graded him higher than Suh on most breakdowns. Which brings me to my next point…

The Real Deal – Biggest Career Games
I can remember Suh haunting Colt McCoy and the Texas Longhorns in the Big 12 Championship game. I can’t remember McCoy doing anything special as the Oklahoma Sooners spiraled out of contention as Bradford’s injury derailed their entire season.

If anyone can remember a game that McCoy virtually took over, please feel free to remind me.

Final Verdict
If the Detroit Lions don’t draft Suh with the second overall pick, they’ll fall victim to the “analysts” and “experts” that have filled their ears with beaming reports on McCoy.

He’s not a bad booby prize for the Bucs at third overall, but Suh has already proven that he can overpower the burly offensive lines in the Big 12 and proved it in a big game against Texas.

Again, this is nothing against McCoy. He just doesn’t belong in the same conversation as Ndamukong Suh, and the fact that he’s allowed to be part of this debate simply means we’re giving too much thought to what should be an easy pick at Number-2.

Let’s just hope, for Detroit’s sake, that they don’t make the same mistake that the experts have.
