2010 Heisman Trophy Favorites

August 1, 2010

With the summer sun starting to set, it’s never too early to look at the preseason college football betting odds.

And with them, let’s look at the odds for the favorites in this year’s Heisman Trophy race.

Mark Ingram (+350): If you’d gone to the sports book at this time last year trying to make a preseason Heisman Trophy wager, Ingram’s name wouldn’t have even been on the board. Now, one year later he looks to become just the second player ever to take home the award twice.

After a solid freshman season, Ingram burst onto the scene in 2009, rushing for 1658 yards and 18 touchdowns, becoming a key cog in Alabama’s high octane offense.

The sophomore finished the season beating out Colt McCoy, Toby Gerhart and others to win the Heisman, becoming the first Crimson Tide player to ever do so.

But as we enter 2010, there are some questions about the validity of an Ingram repeat performance. The biggest comes in the form of his backup Trent Richardson, a true freshman last year, who rushed 751 yards and will only receive more carries with his additional experience.

Either way, Ingram is still the favorite heading into the season, and there’s good reason why. His campaign to become just the second two-time winner ever starts in just a few weeks.

Terrelle Pryor (+450): College football fans and bettors alike always knew that Pryor had the talent to make himself a Heisman frontrunner.

Well, in the last couple games of 2009, he showed exactly what makes him so special, leading Ohio State to six straight victories down the stretch, including an emphatic Rose Bowl win over Pac-10 champ Oregon.

And in was in that game that Pryor showed the dual-threat skills that made him the most sought after player in the high school class of 2008.

Against Oregon, he threw for 266 yards and two touchdowns, and picked up several big gains with his feet, finishing with 72 yards rushing.

Now that Pryor has shown his true skills, Ohio State fans believe their 6’5 quarterback has what it takes to lead their team to a National Championship. But whether he gets them there or not, there are few safer picks for the Heisman Trophy in the college football betting odds.

Jake Locker (+800): With the opportunity to leave Washington, and have been potentially the No. 1 pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, Locker shocked observers last winter and chose to return to Seattle for his senior year. Will college football’s most naturally skilled player take home the Heisman?

Many football bettors seem to think so, as Locker returns from a season that saw him throw for 2800 yards and 21 touchdowns, while also finishing as Washington’s second leading rusher with 388 yards.

Things won’t be easy for Locker, but now in his second year in coach Steve Sarkisian’s offense, many think he’ll finally break out into college football’s best player.

There are a lot worse wagers you could make in the college football betting odds than Locker to win the Heisman.
