2010 Heisman Betting Watch – You Can’t Ignore Blackmon Anymore

October 26, 2010

1. Cameron Newton (QB – Auburn Tigers)

You have to imagine that every time a Florida Gators fan watches Cameron Newton tear up games while leading the Heisman race, they have to just be heart broken. He was supposed to be the guy that replaced Tim Tebow but screwed up with an alleged theft involving a fairly expensive laptop.

Maturity takes time with these college kids, and if his off-field maturity matches the kind of poise and presence Newton shows on the field, the Heisman betting race is his to lose. Newton has 1,364 passing yards complimented by 1,077 yards on the ground and has amassed 27 touchdowns in total.

If anything, Newton should win the Heisman for finally putting the absurd undefeated streak of Les Miles and the LSU Tigers to rest. Thank the lord that crap show is over.

Next Game: Auburn -7.0 vs. Mississippi

2. Justin Blackmon (WR – Oklahoma State Cowboys)

Oklahoma State suffered a heart breaker against Nebraska which dropped them from three spots in the BCS standings. Blackmon, however, had another outstanding game and is without a doubt the best receiver in the league.

Blackmon totaled 157-yards on just 5 catches and had two touchdowns in a 41-51 loss to the Cornhuskers.

Frankly, if Blackmon doesn’t get an invite to the Heisman ceremony at the year’s end, then you know for a fact that there’s a huge position bias with the pollsters and voters. He has yet to have less than 125-yards receiving in a game and no team has been able to hold him out of the endzone.

Think I’m insane for ranking him this high? Let me put this another way – he’s caught as many touchdown passes as Jake Locker and Jacory Harris have thrown.

Next Game: Oklahoma State -6.5 vs. Kansas State

3. LaMichael James (RB – Oregon Ducks)

James is such a splendid back to watch, but he’s also playing behind a great offensive line in Oregon. The Ducks are helping him pad his Heisman betting resume too. He piled up 123-yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns in a 60-13 decimation of the UCLA Bruins.

He gets a chance to finally make Oregon the cream of the Pac-10 crop when they visit the Coliseum this weekend to tackle the Trojans.

Next Game: Oregon -6.5 vs. USC

4. Andrew Luck (QB – Stanford Cardinals)

Luck has barged in to this discussion by steadying the Cardinals after the departure of former Heisman betting candidate, Toby Gerhart, who is now a Minnesota Vikings back.

At 6-1 SU, the Cardinals will put themselves in to a great position to contend with Oregon for the Pac-10 title, especially if Luck continues to be an engineer with keen field vision like he’s been all season. A great matchup against Jake Locker will help put Luck further on the map like he deserves.

Next Game: Stanford -7.5 vs. Washington

5. Kellen Moore (QB – Boise State Broncos)

Look at the NCAAF betting spreads in each of the “next games” listed amongst the top-5. Notice something different about Boise State and Kellen Moore’s? It’s ten whole points higher than the other four Heisman contenders COMBINED.

That should tell you the meat and potatoes of why Boise State isn’t a true BCS contender, and why Moore’s Heisman betting stock keeps getting low balled by yours truly.

Next Game: Louisiana Tech vs. Boise State -37.5

BIGGEST LOSER – Landry Jones (QB – Oklahoma Sooners)

Jones will be in this discussion for the next few years, so don’t feel bad for him. His 303-yards passing and 3 touchdowns were offset by a pair of brutal interceptions that derailed Oklahoma in a 27-36 loss to Missouri that cost them a shot at the BCS title and the coveted top-ranking in the standings.

Next Game: Colorado vs. Oklahoma -23.0

BIGGEST RISER – Robert Griffin III (QB – Baylor Bears)

This is Griffin’s second appearance in the “biggest riser” spot, and for good reason. He threw for 404 passing yards and notched 4 touchdowns with just 1 pick. The oddsmakers have caught on to Baylor, but Griffin can make substantial noise in the Heisman betting race if he comes up huge against Texas this coming weekend.

Next Game: Baylor vs. Texas -8.0
