2010 Heisman Betting Race – Newton, James Making This A Two-Horse Race
November 3, 2010
1. Cameron Newton (QB – Auburn Tigers)
As has been the case for nearly a month, the football betting race is Newton’s to lose. He put up 209 yards and a pair of passing touchdowns against Mississippi…and inexplicably caught a touchdown pass as well. Auburn holds on to the number-one spot in the polls thanks to being the cream of the SEC crop as well. Is there anything he can’t do at the college level?
Next Game: Chattanooga vs. Auburn

2. LaMichael James (RB – Oregon Ducks)
It seems that there’s only one guy who can compete with Newton’s gaudy numbers, and that’s Oregon Ducks’ running back LaMichael James. He posted 239 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns in a win over USC and keeps his Ducks atop the Pac-10. The problem is that he has virtually identical rushing stats to Newton. His 1,210 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground aren’t so dissimilar from Newton’s 1,1222 yards rushing with 14 scores on the ground which kills his Heisman betting status for now…but he’s doing enough to stay in a close second.
Next Game: Washington vs. Oregon -27.0
3. Andrew Luck (QB – Stanford Cardinals)
Had Luck actually bested Oregon, instead of getting trampled, he would be right up there with Newton. Still, he led Stanford on a 41-0 route of Washington, outdueling top NFL prospect Jack Locker. He needs a big thrust in to the Pac-10 title game to get an invite to New York City.
Next Game: Arizona vs. Stanford -7.0
4. Kellen Moore (QB – Boise State Broncos)
Not to be outdone by Newton, Moore had his own receiving touchdown as well. With 298-yards and 2 scores over the weekend, Moore keeps putting up decent numbers but his overall stats are trailing both Luck, Newton and others.
If he’s getting so much attention for the Heisman, why isn’t Hawaii quarterback Bryant Moniz, who leads the nation in touchdown passes and yards? Answer: because Boise State plays in a crap infested conference. Speaking of which, guess who’s playing each other this weekend…
Next Game: Hawaii vs. Boise State -23.5
5. Robert Griffin III (QB – Baylor Bears)
Griffin had another strong performance, but what’s killing him in the Heisman betting race is the fact that his team is touting two losses. A win over Texas should’ve thundered Griffin in to contention, but he’s simply too far behind the pace set by Newton and Luck. He followed up his 404-yard and 4 touchdown performance against Kansas State with a 219 passing yard game against the Longhorns while accounting for 3 total touchdowns and could gain steam down the road if things fall his way.
Next Game: Baylor vs. Oklahoma State -9.0
BIGGEST LOSER – Justin Blackmon (WR – Oklahoma State Cowboys)
The DUI was probably the dumbest thing a college football player in his position has done in a while, and Blackmon had enough troubles winning the Heisman betting race with Newton, James and the horrible chances of receivers garnering the award in the first place. He needs to bounce back hard, fast and relentlessly. Football Odds are he will.
Next Game: Baylor vs. Oklahoma State -9.0
BIGGEST RISER – Taylor Martinez (QB – Nebraska Cornhuskers)
After throwing for 323-yards and 5 touchdowns against Oklahoma State, Taylor Martinez led the Huskers in a 31-17 romp over No.6 Missouri. The problem here is that Martinez wasn’t the big reason they won. Instead his running back, Roy Helu Jr., piled up 307 yards on the ground with 3 touchdowns.
Still, Martinez is the main man in Nebraska which sits on the verge of serving up some BCS upsets of their own with a seventh overall ranking in the standings. Don’t count Martinez out of the Heisman betting season just yet, especially with his team peaking at the right time.
Next Game: Nebraska -18.5 vs. Iowa State
