2010 Heisman Betting – Week 6

October 5, 2010

1. Denard Robinson (QB – Michigan Wolverines)

It’s hard to keep ignoring the massive games that Robinson keeps churning out. Actually check that – it’s impossible. Robinson threw 10-of-16 passes for 277-yards passing with 3 touchdowns, while adding another 217 rushing yards with a pair of scores on the ground over the weekend against Illinois.

The Michigan Wolverine quarterback’s 688 rushing yards this season lead the country. He’s 60-yards ahead of KSU’s Daniel Thomas, and a whopping 114-yards ahead of Oklahoma State’s Kendall Hunter.

On top of that, Robinson is leading a resurgent charge for the once dwindling Michigan football program, which can’t be undersold. The Wolverine’s rank 18th, will continue to get major coverage as one of the prominent programs and that means more spotlight time for Robinson. The more he gets, the better his Heisman betting chances are.

Next Game: Michigan State vs. Michigan -4.5

2. Terrelle Pryor (QB – Ohio State Buckeyes)

Pryor gets edged out by Robinson on sheer numbers alone. Pryor totaled just 180 total yards from scrimmage and 2 passing touchdowns while notching another pick. It was heroic of him to lead his team to a win while injured, but he needs big games considering the gaudy numbers Robinson is putting up.

The reason Pryor is still edging out the other quarterbacks like Moore, Mallet, McElroy and others is because he’s not a prototypical passer. Frankly, he’s the only athlete at the position that can keep up with Robinson’s continued excellence.

Next Game: Indiana vs. Ohio State -22.5

3. LaMichael James (RB – Oregon State)

James padded his numbers at the last minute with a 76-yard touchdowns run with barely over a minute left in the thrilling win over Stanford, bringing him to 257-yards on the day with 3 rushing touchdowns to boot. That’s a massive day for a running back, but only slightly better than what Robinson managed to accomplish on the ground alone.

Which is ultimately a huge problem for any tailback in this race. Robinson continues to turn in “Michael Vick” type games and that’s giving him a massive advantage over everyone else. The biggest difference maker for James isn’t just his numbers alone. The Ducks are the third best team in the country and that helps your Heisman football betting value no matter what.

Next Game: Oregon -34.5 vs. Washington State

4. Mark Ingram (RB – Alabama Crimson Tide)

Ingram’s biggest problem – yards. He has so much ground to make up in the Heisman betting race that he can’t afford to have games of less than one-hundred yards. On Saturday, in a romp over Florida, Ingram rushed for just 47-yards, though he scored two touchdowns. Two per week, while maintaining Alabama’s top overall ranking, will keep him viable if you’ve already thrown your money his way.

Next Game: Alabama -7.0 vs. South Carolina

5. Cameron Newton (QB – Auburn Tigers)

With 245-passing yards and 3 touchdown passes, it’s getting harder each week to ignore Newton’s underdog status in this race. The fact that Auburn is still undefeated at 5-0 SU should be opening everyone’s eyes, and if the Tigers stay undefeated up until their meeting with Alabama, this could be a crazy team to watch. Newton, for his part, is electric to watch.

Next Game: Auburn -8.0 vs. Kentucky

BIGGEST LOSER – Kellen Moore (QB – Boise State Broncos)

Who cares if he beat up on New Mexico State for 197-yards and 3 touchdowns? Frankly, he should’ve. I can’t wait for the Broncos to lose to Nevada in late November, ending the hype train around Moore who ranks 40th in total yards as a quarterback in passing. He should be leading the country given his schedule.

Next Game: Toledo vs. Boise State -39.0

BIGGEST RISER – Landry Jones (QB – Oklahoma Sooners)

The future of Oklahoma Sooners football rests in the hands of Jones, who completed 24-of-39 passes for 236 yards and 2 touchdowns in a big rivalry win over the Texas Longhorns. What’s even more startling is the fact that Oklahoma managed to convert 9-of-20 third-downs during the 28-20 victory.

The undefeated Sooners rose in to the No.6 spot in the AP Top-25 and that’s made Jones an outside shot to win the Heisman betting race. As I’ve said, ridiculous numbers are the theme of this year’s battle and Jones ranks 4th in the nation with 1,457 passing yards on the season.

Unfortunately, the timing is really bad for Jones. He’s headed in to a BYE week which will kill his momentum. He’s making his case for the 2011 Heisman betting race though.

Next Game: Iowa State vs. Oklahoma (October 16th)
