American Idol – Roddick vs. Monfils in the Last 16

March 31, 2009

Key Biscayne, Florida – Gael Monfils is quickly gaining a reputation for show-stopping circus performances in his matches and this may be a good development for the Frenchman, as he will need all the artifice his French soul can muster when he comes up against local hero Andy Roddick in the last 16. Getting to the last 16 was not easy for Monfils. Not by any means. His third round encounter against Marat Safin turned out to be one of those said spectacles as Monfils managed to avert nigh defeat, saving two match points in the process, when he stormed back for a marathon victory 5-7, 7-5, 7-6(3).

After taking the first set the Russian looked like he was on his way to meeting Roddick for a spot in the quarters. Safin saved a set point in the opening frame before taking the set 7-5. Monfils, however, recovered in the second set to force a third and decisive frame. The third set was a wildly erratic affair with more momentum swings than the American Jive but Safin rushed to the 5-2 lead. He had the match on his racquet. Then a brain cramp together with a thoroughly engaging Monfils, who rallied the crowd behind him with his sensational and ridiculous shot making ability, closed out the match, stunning the Russian to advance into the last 16.

To say Monfils will have an even tougher time against Roddick on Tuesday is a given. He will be somewhat emotionally exhausted after his third round heroics against Safin. More importantly, he will not enjoy the same atmosphere, as the partisan crowd will surely show their allegiance to the local idol and their best shot for an American to win the title. That said, if Monfils can find the same intensity when he went on to beat Safin, he could give Roddick a serious run for his money. As he brought the crowd to life, he can take the life out of them if he were to mastermind the upset and send Roddick packing.

This should be the marquee matchup of the last 16 and the plum pick in the marketplace. Here is a look at how they stack up against each other.

Tennis Betting Line: Andy Roddick -250 Gael Monfils +185

Match Time: 12:00 P.M. Eastern Time Tuesday March 30 2009

Head-to-Head Analysis: Gael Monfils leads the head-to-head series 3-2. In fact, at the start of the season, he had a decided 3-1 edge having beaten Roddick three consecutive times since 2006 at the ATP Masters Series in Rome. Roddick got into the win column against Monfils in Doha earlier this year when he beat the Frenchman in the semis 7-6(1), 3-6, 6-3. Roddick beat Monfils after the Frenchman had beaten Rafael Nadal in the quarters.

Tennis Betting Analysis: No. 6 Roddick is on to his career best start with a 23-4 mark and 1 ATP title. He has reached the semis or better in all competitions entered. In reaching the last 16 in Miami, he improves to 25-4. Roddick has not been really tested yet, beating Diego Junqueira in the blink of an eye 6-1, 6-1 in the second round and Dmitry Tursunov 7-6(9), 6-2 in the third round.

No.10 Monfils is 13-6 on the season. His highlight reel includes a semi appearance in Doha, a last 16 at the Australian Open and a semi appearance in Rotterdam. Monfils took time out during this early hard court swing to contest a clay court tournament in Acapulco. He finished runner-up (l. to Nicolas Almagro) . At Indian Wells, Monfils fell in his opening round match (l. to John Isner).

In Miami, Monfils has had an emotional run through Miami, taking three sets in both matches. He needed three against American qualifier Michael Russell and three against Marat Safin.

Tennis Betting Verdict: Having clocked a lot of court time already is a serious handicap against Monfils and it begs the question whether he will have enough in the tank to take in to this match against Roddick. IT will certainly be the difference between sizzling and fizzling.

No question, Monfils can beat Roddick (so he is worth the small stake) but he will have to be on top of his game to do so. The crowd will factor huge for Roddick and they will try to carry him to victory. Given current form though online bettors have to go like Roddick and go with the odds makers’ favourite.

Tennis Free Picks: Roddick in three sets

Miami Masters Last 16 – Stepanek vs. Verdasco

March 31, 2009

Key Biscayne, Florida – The clash between veteran Radek Stepanek and red-hot Fernando Verdasco in the Miami Masters R16 is their third meeting in 2009. They are familiar foes just about now. Stepanek has the lifetime edge over Verdasco but they are level on the season at one all. Of all their matches – over the course of this season and their careers – this R16 clash is perhaps the more significant, as there is a quarterfinal spot at a major event on the line. The prize is that much bigger; the pressure that much more intense.

Both players have hit a fine run of form this season. Verdasco is memorable for his deep Australian Open and Indian Wells runs but Stepanek has the hardware, having won two titles – Brisbane and Los Angeles. Despite the difference, they are two of the hottest players this season in the eyes of many and as they collide, theirs will be an exciting battle sports bettors should spot.

Tennis Betting Line:

Radek Stepanek +3 -130 +175 23 O -125 U -115

Fernando Verdasco -3 -110 -225 23 O -125 U -115

Match Time: Not Before 2:00 P.M. Eastern Time Tuesday March 31 2009

Head-to-head Analysis: Lifetime, Stepanek owns the 3-1 edge. In 2009, they are level at 1-1. Stepanek beat Verdasco in the title match in Brisbane 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Verdasco avenged the loss at the Australian Open, beating Stepanek in the R32 6-4, 6-0, 6-0.

Tennis Betting Analysis:

Fernando Verdasco -225: Verdasco arrived in Miami 12-3 on the season, comprised of a runner-up finish in Brisbane, a semi run in Melbourne and a quarterfinal appearance in Indian Wells. To know Verdasco as he once was, these results are simply staggering. There was never any doubt he had talent, he just was not known for any noteworthy results. Well that is behind him now and sports bettors have recognized this and flock to back him in most matchups.

In Miami, Verdasco improves to 14-3, beating Benjamin Becker and Feliciano Lopez. His second match went the distance and finished late last night. Lopez gave Verdasco a run for his money but in the end, the favoured Spaniard persevered 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Radek Stepanek +175: Stepanek is 17-5 on the season. In addition to picking up two titles, he also finished runner-up in Memphis. Stepanek fares better on the smaller stage as his results on the big stage evince. At the Aussie Open he was dismissed in the third round. In Indian Wells, he fell in his opening match. That said, he has clearly done better in Miami to reach the last 16. And he is on the brink of a quarterfinal berth for the first time in a major event in 2009.

Stepanek reaches the last 16 with victories over Bobby Reynolds and most impressively, over Fernando Gonzalez. He improves to 19-5 on the season.

Tennis Betting Verdict: Given how well Stepanek played against Gonzalez, he improved his chances for this match. Stepanek is a wily opponent and when he serves and covers the net well, he is tough to beat. Verdasco has a huge arsenal of shots to pull from but his confidence is still suspect at times. If he falters against Stepanek as he did against Lopez he will be in serious trouble. Most sports bettors I imagine would favour Verdasco as the odds makers do but Stepanek is not without a chance. Beating Verdasco would be seen as an upset but not a stunner as he is beatable. Stepanek did it once before and he can do it again. Taking the bait and betting on the underdog would be sensible. Don’t go betting the farm on it though. For my part, I do like Verdasco to come through.

Tennis Free Picks: Verdasco in three sets

Del Potro vs. Ferrer do Battle for a Spot in the Quarters

March 31, 2009

Key Biscayne, Florida – Juan Martin Del Potro and David Ferrer will headline the late afternoon action in the Grand Stand stadium after the scintillating clash between Radek Stepanek and Fernando Verdasco completes. Just like its predecessor, this matchup is yet another plum pick in the tennis betting market and online bettors would do well to spot it.

Smart money leans towards the favourite Juan Martin Del Potro—so they say. Methinks, sports bettors should hedge their bets on David Ferrer. Del Potro is, by virtue of his performance over the course of the last seven or eight months, higher ranking and one title on the season, the favourite. Yet, the memory of his abysmal defeat at the Australian Open to Roger Federer, where he was sent packing with his tail firmly between his legs 6-3, 6-0, 6-0, is uppermost in my mind. In Indian Wells, he didn’t give an exceptionally good account of himself either. He needed three sets in every match until he was dismissed in straight sets by Nadal in the quarters. Having barely scraped by on significant punts and fallen short on others before, methinks sports bettors could do worse than to take a position against him in favour of the underdog.

Tennis Betting Line:

David Ferrer +2½ -110 +140 23½ O -110 U -130

Juan Martin Del Potro -2½ -130 -180 23½ O -110 U -130

Match Time: Not Before 3:30 P.M.. Eastern Time Tuesday March 31 2

Head-to-Head Analysis: David Ferrer leads the head-to-head series 2-1. They met three times in 2008; Ferrer won their first two encounters – Aussie Open and s’Hertogenbosch, while the Argentine won their last match on the season in Tokyo.

Tennis Betting Analysis: David Ferrer has the slight lifetime edge over Del Potro but the Argentine got the better of the Spaniard most recently. In some respects, this makes this match a tough one to call. Then again, maybe not.

For my part, I detect a slight dip in Del Potro’s form. After a stellar summer and fall swing, culminating in his first-ever appearance at the Tennis Masters Cup, and a strong start to 2009 when he won the title in Auckland, Del Potro received a schooling in Melbourne by the maestro. Ever since that loss to Federer, he has not been as consummate in his victories as before. In San Jose and Memphis, he entered the main draw as the second seed and short-odds-on favourite to challenge for the title. But both times, he was taken out in the quarters by two players who rank below him— albeit seeded in the draw. Mardy Fish in San Jose and Radek Stepanek in Memphis.

David Ferrer was suspect last year and got off to a bit of a mixed start in 2009. But the world No.12 has hit a hot streak lately. He reached the Dubai final earlier this month and pushed to the last 16 in Indian Wells. He reaches the last 16 in Miami and now is on the brink of going one better.

Tennis Betting Verdict: I like David Ferrer in this matchup because he seemingly is moving from strength to strength. Del Potro seems to be slipping somewhat. Given the confidence the Spaniard has right now together with his overall dogged determination, he will give Del Potro a run for his money. Makes him worth the play.

Tennis Free Picks: David Ferrer +2½ -110 | +140 | 23½ O -110 |

Sony Ericsson Quarters – Azarenka vs. Stosur

March 31, 2009

Key Biscayne, Florida – The women’s front moves into the quarterfinal round on Tuesday and amongst the women in the final eight, Samantha Stosur of Australia emerges as the surprise unseeded player, seizing a spot opposite one of the hottest young teenagers on the WTA circuit, Viktoria Azarenka. What is noteworthy about Stosur’s run is that she was in Dinara Safina’s eighth of the draw. Most pundits did not have her pushing past the world No.2 Safina. Yet, that is exactly what the Aussie did, beating the Russian in the third round – surprisingly easily one might add 6-1, 6-4. In the last 16, Stosur stared down veteran Amelie Mauresmo, beating the Frenchwoman 6-4, 6-4.

Viktoria Azarenka’s journey through the draw is hardly surprising. She is one of the favourites in Miami and most sports betting fans and pundits alike expected her to hold her weight.

Therefore, as these two players get set to battle for a spot in the semis, naturally, the eleventh seed Viktoria Azarenka is the favourite. But Stosur has gone on a bit of a giant-killing spree in Miami, can she do it once again?

Tennis Betting Line:

Victoria Azarenka -4 -115 -400 21 O -110 U -130

Samantha Stosur +4 -125 +250 21 O -110 U -130

Match Time: Not Before 7 P.M. Eastern Time Tuesday March 31 2

Head-to-Head Analysis: This is the third career meeting between the two. Azarenka owns the head-to-head series 2-0. The last time they met was in 2008 in Los Angeles. Azarenka beat Stosur 6-4, 7-6(4).

Tennis Betting Analysis: This should be an interesting match. Viktoria Azarenka is the clear favourite at -400 odds. She is an impressive 17-2 on the season with two titles – Brisbane and Memphis. She improves to 20-2 over her course to the quarters of the Sony Ericsson Open. Azarenka had a relatively routine path. She beat Pavlyuchenkova, Chakvetadze and Szavay to reach the quarters. A fortnight ago in Indian Wells, she was a semi-finalist (l. to eventual champion Vera Zvonareva).

Samantha Stosur is a bit of a surprise in Miami. Prior to the Sony Ericsson Open she had not achieved much of note, as evinced by the 5-5 mark on the season she brought to this event. Understandably, she was not tipped to navigate such a course. But as she did, and against all odds come to that, she has to be commended. Her value has taken an uptick as well.

Tennis Betting Verdict: There is no doubt the tennis betting trend will favour Azarenka. Of the two players, she is the proven one and the more experienced at this level. That Stosur has been a bankable underdog over the course of the Sony Ericsson Open lends bettors viable grounds to hedge their bets on her. Indeed, she has had a good run but I think she will meet her match in the quarters.

Tennis Free Picks: Azarenka in straight sets.

Blockbuster Matchup – Nadal vs. Wawrinka for Spot in Quarters

March 31, 2009

Key Biscayne, Florida – Top seed and world No.1 Rafael Nadal is set to continue his Miami Masters campaign at the expense of Stanislas Wawrinka today in the last 16. The second ranked Swiss will hope to halt a soaring Nadal but with a coveted quarterfinal spot hanging in the balance and Nadal playing some of his best tennis on hard courts lately (aside from the frustrating third round match against Frederico Gil yesterday), sports bettors are loathe contemplating Wawrinka could accomplish the feat. In fact, odds makers would agree tipping Nadal the huge favourite on the money line, and setting a rather wide odds on the spread and rather low total odds on the over/under.

Tennis Betting Line:

Rafael Nadal -5 -135 -3000 19 O -140 U Ev

Stanislas Wawrinka +5 -105 +1000 19 O -140 U Ev

Match Time: Not Before 7 P.M. Eastern Time Tuesday March 31 2

Head-to-Head Analysis: Rafael Nadal owns the head-to-head series 3-0. All three matches were played in 2007 and Nadal won all three without dropping a set.

Tennis Betting Analysis:

Nadal -3000: Nadal threw down the gauntlet by announcing his intention to accomplish the early North American Masters Series sweep. He is half way there after winning the Indian Wells title a fortnight ago and he now he wants the Miami Masters hardware for his trophy collection as well.

Nadal enters the Miami Masters draw an impressive 21-2 on the season, highlighted by picking up the two major titles on the season to date – the Aussie Open and Indian Wells. In Miami, Nadal improves to 23-2; he beat Simone Bolelli and Frederico Gil to reach the last 16.

Wawrinka +1000: Stanislas Wawrinka did not have a good season until a fortnight ago when he turned things around. In Indian Wells, he pushed to the last 16 (l. to Djokovic). In Miami, he has equalled this result by beating Andreas Seppi and Igor Andreev; theoretically, he is on the brink to go one better.

Tennis Betting Verdict: To reiterate, Wawrinka is theoretically one victory away from the quarterfinal berth. However, in order to take a final eight slot he has to beat the best player on the ATP tour right now. Think about it. How is he supposed to do that when he has never beaten Nadal, never even taken a set of him, not to mention the fact that against top ten players last year he was 4-5 – a personal best. It is a long shot indeed. Moreover, he is not the most confident sort. I mean Djokovic beat him in Indian Wells so it would follow so should Nadal. Nadal did look suspect yesterday against Frederico Gil granted, so there might be a basis for some concern, even flirting with the notion of an upset. But Nadal has been there before and come out on top. So, Nadal is the better play. Full Stop.

Tennis Free Picks: Nadal in straight sets -3000| Rafael Nadal -5 -135 |19 Under Even

Venus Williams tries to join Sister Serena in Semis

March 31, 2009

Key Biscayne, Florida – Venus Williams is a victory away from booking a spot in the semis and a possible final four showdown against her sister Serena Williams. The much-anticipated sister act was tipped from the start of the tournament and just as expected the sisters have not disappointed, navigating a course to the quarters; one victory away from making the pre-tournament prediction a reality.

Next up for Venus Williams is a somewhat surprising quarterfinalist. Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic is seeded 26th in Miami but she fell into Jelena Jankovic’s eight quarter of the draw, which also had 16th seed Dominka Cibulkova and 19th seed Anabel Medina Garrigues. No pundit had expected her to push so deep with such an impressive cast in her corner. Yet, that is exactly what the high-flying Czech has done in Miami. Benesova punched above her weight class to reach the quarters – her biggest career Sony Ericsson WTA Tour quarterfinal. Her reward, a clash against local favourite and bookies favourite Venus Williams.

Tennis Betting Line: Iveta Benesova +700 Venus Williams -1600

Match Time: 11:00 A.M. Eastern Time Wednesday April 1 2009

Head-to-Head Analysis: Venus Williams leads the head-to-head series 2-0. The last time they met was at the Beijing Olympics R32. Williams won comfortably 6-1, 6-4.

Tennis Betting Analysis: It is hard to imagine this match other than a blow out. Venus Williams has a convincing edge over Iveta Benesova and she has never dropped a set to the Czech player. Williams has to like her chances to go one better in Miami. The bookies certainly do tipping her the whopping favourite on the money line. More importantly for sports bettors, Williams has looked relatively good in Miami. She reached the last 16 without dropping a set. She dropped the first set to Agnieszka Radwanska in the last 16 on Monday, but stormed back for the convincing 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory.

Iveta Benesova benefited from the fact that Jankovic bombed in her opening round so she faced Gisela Dulko in the third round after beating Sabine Lisicki in her opening match. She then faced Anabel Medina Garrigues in the last 16 and won handily 6-4, 6-1.

Tennis Betting Verdict: Indeed Benesova is enjoying a Cinderella run in Miami. However, as she has never been this deep at a major tournament, the occasion could be overwhelming. Her opponent even more so, not only for her enviable resume and championship credentials but as she will have home patch edge as well. Betting on Benesova is a long shot punt. The best she can hope for is to give a good account of herself. Venus Williams is the sure play.

Tennis Free Picks: Venus Williams in three sets.

Tiger Woods – The Legend Grows

March 30, 2009

When it comes to sports betting, the injury question is always one of the toughest ones to answer. Coaches and players in individual sports like tennis and golf don’t like to make excuses about them, but injuries are always a huge factor in who wins and who loses. Players and coaches also don’t like to give out information about them and understandably so, because it could provide a competitive advantage to their competitors.

While not many people questioned whether or not Tiger Woods would be able to bounce back from his knee problems, it still is always good for a bettor’s confidence to see him actually go out there and perform the way he did pre-injury, and that’s exactly what Woods (at +200) did at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando this past weekend to win his 66th title on the tour in his illustrious career.

Woods also won the event in spectacular fashion, which could help keep his spirits high going into the Masters, which begins on Thursday, April 9th.

The nine-month injury layoff seems to be in Woods’ rearview mirror considering the show he put on in Orlando to come back from five strokes down on Sunday to beat Sean O’Hair. Woods shot -3 in the final round to win, sinking a 15-footer on the last hole to secure the victory.

Woods probably forgot what it was like to be a in close match like that and that experience will serve as a nice refresher heading into golf’s most prestigious tournament.

Going into the Masters, Woods has odds at the BetOnline.com Sportsbook set at +200. The only other competitor under +1000 in the Masters field besides Woods is Phil Mickelson, who many people still don’t trust to win the big one on the PGA Tour despite some of his recent successes.

Woods is easily the best bet going into the Masters again, and considering the way he looked this past weekend, it’s again safe to place bets on the man many consider the best golfer of all-time despite his career only being about half-over.

Woods has shown the work ethic and the physical fitness level of a pro athlete from one of the major sports, and that’s rare for a golfer. Rest assured that Woods will continue to do everything he can to be out there on the course competing for championships for the foreseeable future, regardless of what kind of injuries he happens to suffer in the meantime.

Not only is Woods arguably the best golfer we’ve seen, he’s also perhaps the toughest and most competitive as well.

1st Quarter Betting – Orlando Magic at Miami Heat

March 30, 2009

Instead of our daily prop bet, we’re going to look at some 1st quarter action, because one line in particular is a total steal.

Today’s 1st Quarter betting odds at the BetOnline Sportsbook offer a few attractive prices, but none more so than the Orlando Magic at Miami Heat line.

Here are the current prices:

Spread:

  • Orlando Magic -1/2pt -115
  • Miami Heat +1/2pt -115

Moneyline:

  • Orlando Magic -130
  • Miami Heat Ev

Before I get into the analysis of this 1st quarter matchup, here are the important stats and betting trends that we need to know:

  • Orlando Magic have a +3.3 point differential in the 1st quarter this season.
Miami Heat have a -2.0 point differential in the 1st quarter this season.
  • The Magic have a +2.2 point differential on the road in the 1st quarter.
The Heat have a -1.3 point differential at home in the 1st quarter.
  • The Magic have won the 1st quarter in their three previous meetings this season with the Heat by an average margin of +5 points.

Analysis: Home teams are usually given a pretty strong edge in 1st quarter betting, because of the extra energy home court gives. Those good Phoenix Suns teams of a couple years ago used to just come out and kill teams in the 1st quarter when they were at home. The Heat are being giving that edge by the bookmakers, giving up only ½ a point to a superior Magic squad. However, Miami has been bucking that trend all year. The 1st quarter has been their worst overall by a longshot (-2.0pt differential), and it’s their worst at home too (-1.3).

If that’s not enough reason to like the Magic, the 1st is their best quarter (+3.3) overall, and their best “q” away from home (+2.2). The Magic are fighting the Celtics for the No.2 seed in the East and have no injuries (other than Nelson), so there’s no reason they won’t bring it right from the start. You definitely want to follow the numbers here and bet the Magic, because they’re such a small favorite in the betting line. The only question is whether you want to take the moneyline or the spread. I don’t mind giving up the half point in order to save 15 on the line, but either is a good bet.

Pick: Orlando Magic -1/2 -115 (1st Quarter Handicap)

NBA Weekly Review – The Race out East

March 30, 2009

With the 2008-09 NBA regular season quickly coming to a close, this look back at the week that was should help point NBA bettors in the right direction toward making a multitude of winning wagers in the BetOnline Sportsbook throughout the upcoming week and heading into the postseason.

In the Eastern Conference, the Cleveland Cavaliers appear to be on a serious mission to dethrone the Boston Celtics as defending conference and league champions.

Cleveland has won a whopping 12 straight games heading into Monday and have reached the 60-win mark for the first time in franchise history.

The Celtics have won two straight and seven of 10 to move into second place in the Eastern Conference, just one-half game ahead on No. 3 Orlando, the winners of each of its last five games.

Sixth place Philadelphia has dropped two straight heading into Monday while the seventh place Detroit Pistons have gone just 4-6 SU in its L/10 but are riding a two-game winning streak heading into the new week.

In the Western Conference, the top-seeded Los Angeles Lakers lost to the Atlanta Hawks their last time out, but have gone an impressive 8-2 SU over its L/10. The second place San Antonio Spurs have gone just 5-5 SU over its L/10 and just don’t seem to have the look of a real threat to the Lakers.

The third place Denver Nuggets have won three consecutive games to move to 8-2 SU in their L/10 while fourth place Denver has gone 7-3 over their last ten contests.

Portland, Utah and New Orleans, seeded fifth through seventh, have all gone 6-4 over their L/10 while eight place Dallas is holding on to their loose grip on the conference’s eighth and final spot.

Other streaking teams include Toronto, winners of four straight, Milwaukee 0-5 SU in their L/10, New Jersey, 0-4 SU in their L/4.

In the Western Conference, the Suns and Thunder have each lost three straight while Golden State has dropped each of its last four contests.
